Having said that, in my opinion, if you ask me, I will say that, Nigeria is due to have state police. Having state police will be one of the ways to effectively combat crime in the country. The reason is obvious. When you police a community, you will be conversant with the residents of that community.

If policeman, for example, is posted to a particular community, and he spent some years in that particular community, the likelihood is that, the policeman  will know many people there and the terrain very well.

But if the policeman is a new person in a strange place, he is likely to face the challenge of knowing the people and the terrain. I repeat, state police is necessary to improve Nigerian Police Force.

Now look at this, some policemen took delight in serving in a particular state, so they lobby to go there. But if there was a law that enact the establishment of the state police, they will not lobby.

Ways to Improve the Nigerian Police Force

In this article however, I will be discussing some of the ways the Nigerian Police Force can be improved. Below are few ways by which, the Nigerian Police Force can be improved:

1. Welfare Package Of Policemen Should Be Improved

This is very important! The relevant authorities are duty bound to make sure that the welfare package of the policemen is improved.

More so, the police service ought to be well funded by the government. Presently, the policemen are yet to be taken good care of.

Nonetheless, the relevant authorities have leaved the welfare of the police officers for state governors to cater for them, whereas the responsibility of catering for the Nigerian police force is in the hand of the federal government of Nigeria. Putting things straight based on this suggestion will definitely lead towards improving Nigerian Police Force.

2. Nigerian Police Force Reform Programme Must Have To Go Deeper

What is the Nigerian Police Force Reform Programme? It has to go deeper. There is need to treat everything that is considered wrong.

What are structural factors and what are the strategic factors that have joined forces to bedevil the police service? Authority will have to look at that.

Again, if you ask me, I will suggest that, the Police Act that give definition on how the police force should operate be reviewed.

Let the documents redefined the powers and limits, as well as, the units of operation of Nigerian Police Force. This will help to address those issues that needed attention.

After that, the next step in this regard, would be the structural requirement, like personnel recruitment, and that will take care of proper scrutiny of the quality of recruits.

3. Nigerian Police Force Must Be Prepared To Tackle Cyber Crime

The digital age has taken the world by storm, and so, there is cybercrime almost everywhere. The question that comes to mind is, how does Nigerian Police force prepared to make sure that, it combat this crime?

That is why, every policeman recruited must be subjected to thorough training in order to prepare them for such challenge and other future challenges.

You will agree with me that, Nigerian Police Force has so much challenges in the system that are yet to be dealt with. Look carefully, you will observe that the world’s social structure is changing hence, the Nigerian Police Force must have move along the trend.

4. Nigerian Police Force Must Be Well Funded

The issue of funding the Nigerian Police Force adequately has remained a thing of concern to many. Adequate funding of the police force in the country and police service commission is very critical, otherwise, the Nigerian Police Force may end up looking elsewhere in order to source for funds in an unethical way so as to fund its operations.

Therefore, funding the Nigerian Police Force adequately for the purpose of carrying out its operations ethically is the key area that will help make the Nigerian Police Force to be improved

5. Nigerian Police Force Oversight Functions Has To Be Monitored

How has this been monitored over the years? One of the important areas in working to improving the Nigerian Police Force is in the area of its oversight functions and how has this been monitored.

This is very critical and important, and the relevant authority has to look at that also in its quest to improve the Nigerian police force.

I therefore, call for attention to most of what I have been saying here, because if they are being embraced, I bet, the Nigerian police force will be improved, and that gap existing between the police and the members of the Nigerian community will be bridged, and Nigeria will start to witness a reformed Nigerian Police Force.

6. Relevant Authority Must Look At The Issue Of Igp’s Appointment And Succession Plan

There is also this issue that has to do with the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police. This issue has to be carefully look at.

Another area will be the issue of the leadership of the Police Service Commission, and this is very critical. More so, looking at the succession plan in the Nigerian Police Force, there should be a very credible and a good succession plan in the Nigerian Police Force perhaps, such that will help make provisions for a clear-cut selection process.

Adopting this simple idea, will help in making sure that the partisanship that normally trails the appointment of police officers will be removed.

This, beyond boosting the morale of police force, will also go a long way to achieving efficiency and effective policing system in Nigeria.
