Are Nigerian Software Engineers Being Underpaid?

Some time ago, reasons to prove that software developers in Nigeria are underpaid was being put to notice and that was as of 2015.

Have things changed in Ever since Then?

According to some of our participant in the survey, this is the information that we have been to gather.

The salary has been scaled into two different category which is the Average and the Median salary

  • Average salary for software engineers = ₦275,980
  • Median salary for software engineers = ₦175, 000

The median salary is a more accurate demonstration of the earnings of engineers for the reason that they have extreme values in the data set.

To estimate if developers currently earn enough, let’s weigh the median salary for developers against the cost of living. It should be noted that there is a dearth of reliable locally sourced data for the cost of living in Nigeria.

In accordance to Numbeo, it has been observed that as at August 2017 the cost of living for a single person who is living in Lagos is estimated to be up to ₦179,543.45 and this is even excluding his/her rent fee.

It is a widely noted that Numbeo is a crowd-sourced global database that makes use of heuristic technology to take out various economic indicators after filtering data which are being provided by their users.

Also, Numbeo helps to gather data manually from authoritative sources which include government, supermarkets, surveys etc.

In respect to this data, for the residents to maintain a basic standard of living including, food, shelter, and healthcare, the employees monthly earning must be aggregated to about ₦180,000 even with the current economic situation.

We have come to get this information from our survey that this is more than the salary of at least 50% of Nigerian software engineers, with his/her rent still being not accounted for.

Depending on the vicinity of Lagos that the person is living in, the house rent for a calm one-bedroom apartment at the time of this writing is currently ranging from about ₦150,000 to ₦1 million per annum in Lagos.

However, While a person who is living in Lagos is renting a 3-bedroom apartment, this may tend to cost him/her between the pay of  ₦700, 000 to over ₦3 million, Following the on the location that the apartment is sighted at. You should note that this amounts to significant expenses on an already deficient income.

Also, have it at the back side of your mind that this can as well be deduced.

Software Engineering is unattractive in Nigeria

Know that Software engineers who are living in the Silicon Valley are some of the top earners in the United States. This compares the remuneration of developers in Silicon Valley to those in Nigeria based on data from Numbeo and Glassdoor.

Standard of living index = Average salary/ Cost of living

It can be deduced that the standard of living for developers in the US is significantly higher than that for engineers working in Nigeria.

This holds true regardless of the fact that cost of living is significantly higher in the US than in Nigeria.

Please note:

  • The salaries stated above are not foolproof and are subject to change.
  • Majority of our participants form specified companies operating, employees working remotely or outside Lagos were not given special consideration.
  • Analysis is based solely on data from specified sources.
