Microfinance banks provide financial services like loans, savings, and insurance to the poor, especially entrepreneurs and small business owners, who have no collateral to qualify for a standard bank loan, and who are not traditionally served by conventional financial institutions.
According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), robust economic growth cannot be achieved without putting in place focused programs that increase access of poor and low-income earners to factors of production, especially credit.
And, this is the reason for microfinance. In 2005, the CBN licensed microfinance Banks to begin operations in Nigeria, and conditions were laid out for microfinance institutions to meet before they would be allowed to operate.

Difference between microfinance banks and traditional commercial banks
However, despite being banking institutions, microfinance banks are different from traditional commercial banks. The major differences between both banking institutions were that microfinance backs were established to offer loans to individuals without the needed collateral to acquire them, while commercial banks required collateral – which was not less in value compared to the loan – before loans would be given.
Also, microfinance Banks had a limit to the amount they could give out as loans, while commercial banks did not.
History of Microfinance Banks in Nigeria
The Role of Microfinance Banks in poverty reduction in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized. 5 years after the CBN licensed microfinance banks to begin operation, a 2010 EFInA study revealed a marginal increase of those served by the formal finance market from 36.0% in 2005, to 36.5% in 2010.
When those that had financial services from the informal sector such as savings clubs/polls (Osusu, Ago, and money lenders) were included, the total access percent was 53.7%. Meaning 40.3% – or 39.2 million adult Nigerians – were excluded from services provided by financial institutions in the country, especially Banks.

Challenges of Microfinance Banks in Nigeria
However, despite the commendable efforts of the CBN, there are still flaws within the microfinance system in Nigeria. An example is an interest charged on loans by microfinance institutions. Read more on: How to secure an Agricultural loan through the Bank of Agriculture
Most microfinance institutions charge as high as 30% interest on loans – an amount that is more suited for traders, suppliers, and importers rather than poor entrepreneurs.
Also, microfinance institutions in Nigeria, rather than working with the goal of poverty alleviation, are more profit-oriented, and as such are located in the urban areas than in the rural areas where they are needed.
Alongside the flaws in the system, there are also challenges faced by microfinance banks in Nigeria. The lack of banking culture among the rural people, corruption, and most recently, the withdrawal of operational licenses by the CBN from over 200 microfinance banks in the country are some of the challenges these institutions have faced – and are still facing – in recent years.
The CBN however, has shown continuous desire to see the microfinance system thrive in Nigeria. Recently, it released a list of over 800 institutions with operational licenses to operate as microfinance banks in Nigeria. Listed below are the first 200 institutions – in alphabetical order – and their locations, as well as a direct link to the CBN’s website for a complete list.
