CHALLENGES OF STARTING BROILER FARMING BUSINESS

1. HUGE CAPITAL INVESTMENT: Unlike snail farming that can be started with a very small capital. Broiler farming requires huge investment. Especially, if you intend to make money from it.

To start a poultry farm, you need to acquire a land that is situated outside residential area. This is because chicken drops have offensive odour. You also need money to set up the structures, purchase the food and other items needed.

Also, success in broiler farming is directly linked to the amount of capital you invest into the business.

And unlike fish farming, you require the help of at least an employer if you want to start a commercial broiler farm.

So, ensure you have adequate capital before going into poultry.

2. DISEASE OUTBREAK: This is the biggest challenge in poultry farming. Especially broiler farming. Chickens like humans are vulnerable to infection. And the spread rate is quite high. So, you should ensure to keep the farm clean and disinfected at all times.

You should also de-worm the birds from time to time. And ensure you don’t touch the birds with unsterilized hands.

Also, do not allow visitors to enter the farm unless for special reasons. And contaminated materials shouldn’t be taken into the farm.

2. HIGH COST OF POULTRY FEEDS AND VACCINES: poultry feeds are quite expensive and broilers are heavy feeders. Also most poultry feeds in the market are adulterated.

This affects the growth and health of the birds. The best solution to these problems is to ration the feeds given to the birds and ensure you buy your feeds from well known feed stores.

The vaccines administered to chickens are equally expensive. So, if you enter into broiler farming without adequate financial plan. You might not be able to afford these vaccines when the need arises.

Despite these challenges, broiler breeding remains a very profitable business. And these challenges can easily be tackled following the laid down guidelines in this article.

So, if you believe you have all it takes to overcome these challenges. And reap bountifully from this gold mine. Here are the major requirements to start up your broiler farming business.

START UP REQUIREMENTS FOR BROILER FARMING BUSINESS

1. MARKET RESEARCH AND GOOD BUSINESS PLAN: Like I always say, any business without a good business plan is like a football field without a goal post.

So, for you to start and successfully run a broiler farming business, you need a detailed business plan. And this can only be achieved after you have conducted a rigorous market research.

A thorough market research will enable you to know your potential customers and competitors. Where to get the right feeds, vaccines and every other items needed to start up at an affordable price.

Also, a good business plan will ensure you remain focused in managing the business.

2. REGISTER THE BUSINESS: To ensure that your business becomes a legal entity and stand the chance of enjoying benefits accruable to such entities, you should endeavour to register your broiler farm with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

This shouldn’t be a problem as we have a detailed article on how to register your business in Nigeria.

Here is a link on: HOW TO REGISTER YOUR BUSINESS IN NIGERIA.

3. FARM LOCATION: Broiler farming requires a reasonably large expanse of land. And must be situated outside residential area because of the offensive smell from most chicken farms.

So, you should secure atleast a plot of land and outside residential area. Another factor to consider while siting your broiler farm is nearness to the target market. This goes a long way in minimizing transport cost.

4. HOUSING/CAGE SYSTEM: Basically, there are three housing system used in poultry farming. They are: free range system, battery cage system and deep litter system.

In the free range system, the birds are allowed to roam around and fend for themselves. This is mostly adopted by subsistence farmers. As managing a commercial farm using this system exposes the birds to risk.

In the battery cage system, the cages are constructed using metals. The cages are usually divided into different compartments. And each compartment houses a number of birds.

The cages are also constructed to have feeding and water troughs while the bird droppings fall to the floor underneath.

This system allows for a cleaner poultry environment. However, it is mostly ideal for layer breeding(egg production)

In the deep litter system, the chickens are reared in a room with concrete floor. However, the floor of the room is spread with saw dust or wood shavings.

The saw dust serves as a cushion to the birds and prevents their droppings from sticking to the floor. The saw dust is changed on a regular basis usually by removing the saw dust.

This is the best and most widely used system for broiler farming. But in the event of disease outbreak, the system facilitate the spread of disease. This is because the birds are allowed to mix freely.

However, adequate hygiene and regular vaccination of the bird reduces the chances of disease outbreak.

So, I still recommend the deep litter system for anyone who intend going into broiler farming.

And finally, ensure that the farm is secured against thieves and predators.

5. FEEDS: Just like fish farming, a great deal of the investment in broiler farming goes into the feeding.

In fact, about 70 to 75 percent of the running expenses goes into feeding. You may decide to produce the feeds yourself to cut cost. And ensure that high quality feeds are fed to your birds. Or you may decide to buy feeds from the market.

Whichever way, you should endeavour to supply your broilers with high quality feeds. For optimal growth and health.

6. STOCKING: choosing a niche in poultry business is a very critical decision. However, this article is focused on rearing of chickens for meat production. That is, broiler farming.

So, for this, you are expected to stock your farm with broilers(the white leghorn). This is because broilers grow very fast. And often weigh a lot more than the other chicken breeds.

And you know what that means: more weight, more money.

You should also endeavour to get healthy chicks from a reliable farm. So, that you don’t suffer setback in the form of disease outbreak, high mortality rate or retarded growth.

7. POULTRY EQUIPMENT: After setting up your poultry farm structure, you should ensure it is adequately equipped before you introduce the chicks.

The necessary equipments you must have before starting a broiler farm are: feeding troughs, water troughs, source of clean water, heat and lighting system, and a waste disposal system.

8. RESEARCH AND TRAINING: broiler farming do not require having formal education. But, it is advisable to have yourself attached to an existing broiler farm for at least 2 months before you start yours.

This would avail you the opportunity to learn all the intricacies of the business.

Also reading good posts like this. And researching exposes you to best practices in broiler farming. Thus, guiding you in successfully running your farm.
