Nigeria is blessed with a good numbers of fruits, which grows as a result of the weather, climatic condition and the soil type around the country that supports its growth. Some fruits are more commonly found growing in specific parts of Nigeria.

For instance some fruits that can be found growing in the eastern part of Nigeria might not be found growing or might grow scarcely in the west, north and southern parts.

Fruits are a good source of vitamins, and the body needs these vitamins for it major functions. Nigerian fruit salad is usually made with the combination of various fruits commonly found sold or planted around the country, and they include mango, orange, paw-paw, watermelon, pineapple, banana, apples, avocado pear, straw berry, kiwi etc. Generally a rich plate of fruit salad should comprise of at least 5 to 7 different kinds of fruits.

List of fruits for making fruit salad – simple Nigerian fruit salad recipe

  1. Pine apple
  2. Water melon
  3. Banana
  4. Apple
  5. Pawpaw
  6. Mango
  7. Orange

How to prepare the fruits

  1. Peel off the back of the pine apple, wash with water and cut with a kitchen knife into desirable sizes that will be easy to chew and set aside.
  2. Peel off the back of the water melon, wash it then cut it into tiny shapes and set aside.
  3. Peel off the back of the banana, cut as well into tiny shapes and set aside.
  4. Wash the apple, divide it into two, it will give you access to remove the seeds from the fruit, cut the apple into small shapes.
  5. Peel off the back of the pawpaw, remove the seeds inside the fruit and cut into tiny sizes.
  6. Wash the back of the mango properly with water, make sure the mango is ripe enough to be chewed easily, then cut the mango into halves, make sure one half is bigger than the other in other to not allow you cut through the seeds, remove the seed in the mango, then cut the mango into tiny shapes.
  7. Peel off the back of the orange then cut the orange into tiny shapes. Make sure to remove all the seeds inside the orange.

Note: it is very important that the fruits to be used for any fruit salad are ripe enough to make cutting and chewing easy.

Most fruits are naturally sweet so when you have the combination of these sweetness in one bowl you can be sure to satisfy your taste buds at the peak.

How to mix the fruits for the salad

a. Mix the sliced fruits together in one bowl.

b. You can blend the orange to extract the juice and pour it directly on the chopped fruits in the bowl, it will still come out well in the end.

c. Your fruit salad is ready, you can eat it at room temperature or allow it get cold by keeping it in the fridge for few minutes. It all depends of individual preferences.

Fruit salad tends to absorb water and loose quality easily, hence to maximize the shelf-life, a fruit salad should be stored in an air tight container, and stored in a refrigerator. A zip-loc bag is another good example of where a fruit salad can be stored in when refrigerated.
