In most cases poliovirus can destroyed nervous cells, and these are the nervous cells that activate muscles in the body. How does polio disease begins?
The disease begins in most cases with the milder forms, and it comes with a slight cold, that is, when someone catches fever, and this goes on like that, within say, two to three days, the child will start to develop a kind of oheadache and muscle pain.
At this point however, the child will start to experienced serious illness as the fever intensity increases. At this point, it is very dangerous because it causes paralysis of the arms, and paralysis of the face, and that of the chest will begin to occur.
Unfortunately at this point too, the use of one hand or the use of one leg or the use of both the hand and the leg can be lost, whereas breathing can also be impossible at this point thus, leading to death as the case may be.
One feature of poliomyelitis virus is that, it is contagious.
The disease can spread easily and speedily. Children, who live in the same households or who live in the same neighbourhood, where a particular child is infected, will all be infected.
Studies have revealed that, persons who contacted this disease can communicate this disease within seven to ten days before and can spread easily the disease within seven to ten days after their first experience of the symptoms of the disease.
And besides this, the incubation period of the disease to have ranged from say, three days to thirty five days as the case may be.
You may wish to know about the signs and the symptoms of the polio virus disease, and these symptoms are many.
For instance, you can identify the signs and symptoms of poliomyelitis virus, when you or someone catches fever, or when someone looses stool, or when someone has sore throat, or sometimes stomach upset, and in most cases, it would be headache and can also be pain and stiffness in someone’s neck, sometimes stiffness in back and stiffness in legs. The symptoms can also be identify, when someone experienced final paralysis of either leg or hand or both.

How Could Poliomyelitis Virus Be Confirmed

Perhaps, there are different ways by which poliomyelitis virus can be confirmed, but findings however has revealed that, the disease, polio virus can be confirmed through laboratory test. This test can be carried out by testing a child’s stools.
More so, findings have also confirmed that, poliomyelitis virus has no cure. In other words, there is no cure for polio virus and the effects of poliomyelitis virus disease cannot be reversed.
The only way to deal with poliomyelitis virus disease is to stop the disease, and can only be treated through prevention.
And it is important to say here that children can be protected from polio if adequate powerful vaccine can be given to children at when due. This can help prevent the disease and protect lives.

What Type Of Polio Vaccine Should Be Given To Children?

We have stated here earlier that poliomyelitis virus disease has no cure, and the only way to protect lives from polio virus is to stop the disease or by preventing it through timely injecting of children with powerful vaccine. What is this vaccine?
One may ask! It is called, the ‘Oral Polio Vaccine’ OPV. This is the vaccine that should be given to children. However, at what age should this vaccine be given to children to protect them from poliomyelitis virus disease?

At Birth

At birth, is one of the appropriate time to be given a child poio vaccine, this is very important as the effort will help prevent and protect children from polio.

When A Child Is Six Weeks Old

At six weeks of age, a child is permitted to be given polio vaccine. This effort will also help in preventing and protecting children from polio.

When A Child Is Ten Weeks Old

At this age, a child is still due for polio vaccine. It is expected that, a child be given polio vaccine at this age with a view to help prevent and protect children from polio.

When A Child Is Fourteen Weeks Old

Children are also recommended to be given polio vaccine at this age. The purpose remained the same, to help prevent and protect children from polio.
Although, this can be considered as complete schedule for Oral Polio Vaccine nevertheless, all children from age 0 to age five are expected to be given oral polio vaccine, whenever there is supplemental campaigns with a view to fight polio virus disease among children.
Besides, for the fact that polio has no cure, it calls on the members of the public to join and support the fight against polio by making their children available for polio vaccination.
Let me at this point also persuade Nigerians, who are fun of resisting the effort of the government to vaccinate their children to desist from such behaviour that could spell dome to our children since it has posed danger to our children’s lives.
Just like I stated earlier, prevention is the only effective way to prevent our children from polio and other diseases that kill children.

Conclusion
