INEC releases guidelines for political campaigns, party expenses

The Independent National Electoral Commission approved the publication and distribution of guidelines for political campaigns, as well as election expenses for political parties, candidates, and aspirants.

According to Okoye, the commission met on Thursday and debated on numerous topics, including the publication and release of the guidelines, as well as the selection of an INEC Secretary.

“The commission approved the publication and release of the guidelines for the Conduct of Political Rallies, Processions and Campaigns as well as that of Finances and Election Expenses of political parties, Candidates and Aspirants.”NYSC portal

Okoye stated that the INEC has put the two documents to its website and social media accounts, and that copies will be sent to political parties, civil society organizations, the media, and other key players.

He reminded political parties of their obligation to submit the relevant reports to the commission in accordance with Section 90(4) of the Electoral Act 2022 and the applicable penalty for non-compliance as specified in Section 89(4) of the Electoral Act.

Okoye also announced that the commission authorized the reappointment of the commission’s secretary, Mrs. Rose Oriaran-Anthony, for a second and last four-year term, effective December 7, in compliance with Section 8 of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Oriaran-Anthony is a native of Edo.

She possesses a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) in Language Arts from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Abuja, and an additional Master of Public Communication and Public Relations from the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom.JAMB portal

She is the commission’s second female Secretary and the first to have her term extended.

She has served as Public Affairs Officer, Assistant Director (Information and Publicity), Deputy Director (Voter Education), and Director during her tenure with the Commission (Civil Societies Liaison).

Prior to her appointment on December 5, 2018, her most recent position was administrative secretary in Delta.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Section 88 of the Electoral Act states that “the maximum election expenses a presidential contender may incur should not exceed N5 billion.”

“The maximum amount of election expenses to be incurred by a candidate in respect of governorship election shall not exceed N1,000,000,000” while Section 88 (8)  provides that “No individual or other entity shall donate to a candidate more than N50,000,000.”JAMB Result
