Step #1: Visit the Official INEC website

The first step to registering your PVC online is to visit the official INEC registration portal and click on Get Started. Once you do that, you’ll be redirected to a new page with a list of services. On that page, click or tap on New Voter Pre-registration.

Note: This option is specifically for those who have never registered their PVC before. However, there are other options on the website for those who lost their cards or update their information and request a new card.

It’s important that you also note that you can only register once. After the registration, wait for a confirmation message. Do not try to register again after registering because you risk invalidating your registration as signing up several or multiple times is considered a crime.

Step #2: Login or create a portal account

Before you can have access to the registration form, you’ll have to sign into your account (if you already have an account with them) or create one. To create an account, you’ll be required to fill in your name, email, phone number, and address; you’ll also have to create a unique password before clicking or tapping the Submit button.

Make sure to use an email address you still have access to because you’ll be sent a mail immediately to verify your registration. If you can seem to find the mail, check the spam folder.

Open the email sent to you from INEC CVR Portal and click or tap on the link contained in the mail. It’ll redirect you to the sign-in page. This time instead of signing in again (cause you don’t want to make the mistake of creating multiple accounts), click on Log in and insert the email and password you recently created.

Next, you’ll be redirected to the declaration page where you’ll have to confirm that all the information provided is accurate or that nothing is falsified. Make sure to click or tap on the YES button before proceeding.

Step #3: Register

Once you have gone past the declaration page, you’ll be taken to the main registration form. On the form, you’ll be required to fill in the following:

Biodata: Name, date of birth, occupation, gender, NIN, address, and nationality.

Additional information: Level of education, maiden name, disability (if any).

Residence: Country of residence, state of residence, city or LGA of residence.

Birth information: Country of birth, state of birth, city or LGA of birth.

Origin information: Country of origin, state of origin, city or LGA of origin, and place of origin (village or town).

Polling unit: This is information about the state, local government, and area you’d wish or like to vote in.

At the bottom of the page, you’ll find fields where you can submit supporting documents like your passport or national identity passport. Even though this step isn’t compulsory, it helps in facilitating the verification process as it’ll make it easy for INEC to confirm your identity. It also helps INEC link your profile on their database to other databases.

Once you have done that, click or tap on Save and Continue. You’ll be redirected to a new page with confirmation that your application has been successfully updated.

If you didn’t receive the confirmation, click or tap on the hamburger (three horizontal lines) icon found at the top right corner of your screen to have access to your application status.

Step #4: Upload pictures

Next, you’ll be asked to upload two clear close-up pictures of your face: one with a neutral expression and the other with a smiling expression.

To upload the photos, click or tap on Choose File and you’ll be taken to your phone or computer’s camera. After taking the clear selfie, tap or click on Use Photo and the picture will be automatically resized and uploaded.

Step #5: Schedule an appointment

Now you have known how to register your PVC online, the last step is to schedule a convenient appointment to capture your biometric data. Biometrics is simply the unique physical characteristics you have such as your fingerprints and height.

On the page, you’ll find a form carrying a list of the available voter card registration centres closest to you that you can go to get your biometrics done. Once you select a location and time, make sure to be punctual. The exercise doesn’t take long and can be completed in as little as 30 minutes.

If you pick a date you are no longer comfortable with, rather than missing your appointment, you can always reschedule your appointment on the INEC portal.

Once you have done that you’ll receive a temporary voters card (TVC) at the centre which serves as proof that you have completed the registration process—keep your TVC safe because you’ll be asked to present it in order to receive your PVC. Once your PVC ID is ready, you’ll be contacted to go to the location where you did your biometrics to collect it—it could take as long as one to three months to get ready.
