A’Ibom Govt Frowns At ‘Elderly-witch Syndrome’

The Akwa Ibom State Government has frowned that the elderly witch syndrome in the state.

According to THIS DAY, the state government expressed concern over the rising ‘elderly-witch syndrome in the society, with the aged abandoned and tagged witches by the younger generation.

Speaking at the 80th birthday thanksgiving and books presentation by a senior citizen of the state and celebrant, Mkpisong Ememobong Essien, the state Governor, Udom Emmanuel strongly condemned the dubious act of some unscrupulous members of the society dubbing the elderly as witches, thereby denying them the welfare and care they which they rightly deserve. Governor Udom said, “It is disheartening to see some children dub their aged parents as witches. The same parents who took care of them all through their youthful age are now called witches by their children.”

THIS DAY reports that governor Udom Emmanuel wondered why elderly persons were not tagged as witches while catering for their children at their youthful age.

The Governor who was represented by the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Moses Ekpo, urged members of the society to take the children of the celebrant as role models in the care for their aged parents.

In addition, the governor congratulated the celebrant on his 80th birthday adding that he is one of the pillars behind the birth of Akwa Ibom State and the progenitor of the Akwa Ibom Elderly Citizens Assembly, a group that has championed the cause of the elderly in the society. Jamb Result

Speaking, one of the sons of the celebrant, who is the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Ini Ememobong, said he was grateful to God for the life of their father describing his father as a preacher, counsellor, psychologist, disciplinarian and mentor to many.

THIS DAY reports that the celebrant expressed thanks to God and appreciated the large crowd who turned up to celebrate his 80th birthday with him.
