The Blues were edged out by Leicester City at Wembley last term but now have the chance to make up for their mistakes. Their first assignment though is up against the National League side at Stamford Bridge.
Ahead of the clash, the Chelsea squad have been hit by a handful of injuries, leaving Thomas Tuchel with a few decisions to make with regards to his squad. With that being said, football.london has taken a look at the latest fitness and injury news.
Kai Havertz
The German midfielder has enjoyed his cup excursions this season but injured his hand in the process of opening the scoring against Tottenham in mid-week. It was revealed that he had suffered a broken finger, although it is not a problem that will keep him on the sidelines.
What Tuchel said: “Kai’s finger is pretty much okay to play football, so our doctors and physios will take care of him.”
Expected return date: Chesterfield (H) – Jan 8
N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva
The duo were struck down with Covid-19 on the day of the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final and will remain ruled out for this weekend’s tie.
In more positive news, however, they are both feeling little impact of the virus.
What Tuchel said: “Thiago and N’Golo will miss the game because of COVID. They are OK in terms of symptoms but they are out for the game, of course.”
Expected return date: Tottenham Hotspur (A) – Jan 12
Cesar Azpilicueta
Another casualty from the win on Wednesday night was the veteran defender, who was replaced in the dying moments with what looked like a hamstring problem and was taken off for youngster Harvey Vale in injury time.
What Tuchel has said: “From the game the other night, Azpilicueta only had a bit of cramp so no injury and he is fine.”
Expected return date: Chesterfield (H) – Jan 8 jamb result

What Tuchel said: “Reece [James] has a hamstring injury, muscle, with always the examination is a bit later. The images are better if we wait. We will know more today [Friday].”
Expected return date: Six to eight weeks.
Andreas Christensen
Whilst Azpilicueta and Silva have doubts over their involvement against Chesterfield, one man who looks set to play a part is Danish defender Andreas Christensen.
He has recently been struggling with a back injury but has returned to training so looks set to be an option for Tuchel
What Tuchel has said: “Andreas was in training yesterday and hopefully there will be no reaction to his injury.”
Expected return date: Chesterfield (H) – Jan 8
Ben Chilwell
Former Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell is set to miss the rest of the season after requiring surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligament. The west London side had hoped surgery would not be necessary and waited to make a more informed decision but their worst fears were realised.
What Tuchel has said: “Chilly [Ben Chilwell] of course had surgery and has our best wishes. Seems like [for him] the season is over.”
Expected return date: Summer 2022
