1. Rivers State

Rivers State has contributed the most Housemates to this season, with Boma, Beatrice and Peace all hailing from there. Rivers sits on a vast reserve of crude oil and natural gas, and can refine about 340 000 barrels every day, and the capital city – Port Harcourt – is regarded as the centre of the Nigerian oil industry.

2. Cross River State

Tega and Jaypaul both originate from Cross River. Forming part of Nigeria’s border with Cameroon, the state has a large Frenchspeaking population. The state is host to many festivals, including the largest carnival in Africa. Of particular interest to archaeologists and anthropologists are the Ikom monoliths, carved from volcanic stone.

3. Imo State

Maria (Wildcard) and Princess come from Imo, a state in the southeast of Nigeria.  This is clearly a state of surprises: despite being the third smallest in terms of area, the state manages to pack in 163 oil wells, produces natural gas and lead and plenty of palm oil.  Despite all of this, it’s capital city – Owerri – is regarded as Nigeria’s entertainment capital.

4. Edo State

Yet another southern state, Edo also produced two of this year’s Housemates – Nini and Liquorose.  Formed back when Bendel State was cleaved into Edo and Delta states, Edo is the centre of the Nigerian rubber industry.

5. Adamawa State

Located in the country’s northeast, Adamawa was once a subordinate kingdom within the Sultanate of Sokoto. The state is home to two indigenous churches – the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria and the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria – as well as two Housemates – Jackie B and Saskay.

6. Akwa Ibom

As a southern state, Akwa Ibom shares in much of the Nigeria’s oil wealth from offshore fields, though it is also very agricultural, with its people raising yams, rice, cowpeas, maize for subsistence purposes, and oil palm and cocoa as cash crops.  Housemates Angel and Emmanuel are both from Akwa Ibom, originally.

7. Bayelsa State

This state derives much of its revenue from the oil industry and is the location where oil was first discovered in Nigeria. The state is also the location of Edumanom Forest Reserve – the last known site in the entire Niger Delta where one can still find chimpanzees.

8. Ekiti State

Ekiti – like the rest of the states on this list – provided a single Housemate to this season of Big Brother, namely Arin. Created in 1996 from the territory of Ondo State, Ekiti was named for its rugged, mountainous features and undulating landscape – “Ekiti” means “mound”.  Other than these rocky outcrops, the state is also home to tropical forests.

9. Nasarawa State

Nasarawa is home to Farin Ruwa falls – reputed to be among the highest in Africa – and Salt Village, named for the naturallyiodized salt found in a nearby lake. It is also home to Yousef.

10. Kaduna State

Kaduna is home to Sammie, and quite a few other people, too – it’s the third most-populous state in the republic. In fact, it’s been home to people for a very long time – the Nok civilization made it their home as far back as 1500 BCE.

11. Enugu State

Enugu is home to coal, one of the largest grain markets east of the Niger, the country’s first indigenous university and happens to be Whitemoney’s home state.

12. Lagos State

Lagos is home to more than 15 million people and if it were a country, it would be the fifth-largest economy in Africa.  Despite all the people who call it home, Lagos has produced only one Housemate, this year: Saga.

13. Oyo State

Oyo was once home to the Oyo Empire. Today, it’s known as the “Pace Setter State”, and for good reason: the University of Ibadan was the first in Nigeria and Cocoa House (also in the capital of Ibadan) was the first skyscraper in Africa. As far as Big Brother Housemates go, it is responsible for giving us Niyi.

14. Anambra State

Named after the Anam clan, this state is known as the “Light of the Nation”.  It been the home of numerous civilisations since the ninth century CE, including the Kingdom of Nri, who left behind works of iron, bronze, copper and pottery.  This heritage has led to the Ogbunike Caves being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cross is the only Housemate who comes from Anambra.
