Bassey, Martinez comparison unfair – Van der Sar

Five months into his contract with the Amsterdam giants, Bassey has been mercilessly chastised by commentators and fans for his dismal performances and inability to emulate Martnez’s spectacular form.

But Ajax boss Alfred Schreuder has stuck by the former Glasgow Rangers defender, giving him 19 starts across all competitions.

Van der Sar, the legendary Manchester United goalkeeper, commented that Bassey had not yet achieved the level of Martnez at Ajax, observing that he possessed the ability to become a world-class defender but would need to work hard to duplicate the excellent form that drew the club to buy him in July.
