I know for certain that some of my article readers will be wondering what IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is about, do not worry if you fall into that category because after reading this piece I assure you that you will be so grounded in the subject that you can comfortably enlighten others.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm in the uterus of a woman in order to hasten fertilisation with the help of a catheter.

The main objective of IUI is to increase the number of sperm cells that get to the fallopian tube of a woman and consequently increase her chances of fertilisation.

This process is used mainly when there is low sperm count or decreased sperm mobility. The risk involved in IUI is the possibility of infectious diseases from a man’s sperm, cramping and other infections.

IUI tries to separate low moving sperms from ones that don’t move at all. This can only be performed on an open and healthy fallopian tube which can be certified by a trained health professional. For women who are using fertility drugs like Clomid, IUI is only performed between days 12 and 16 of the monthly cycles. This article will look at the cost of Intrauterine Insemination in Nigeria.

When do People Need IUI ?

You may be compelled to ask, “Why do couples undergo Intrauterine Insemination?” You may simply say it is because of childlessness.

Yeah right!! It is important I tell you why couples undergo this process after being childless for a while. Basically, it is important we understand how far sperm cells have to travel before getting to the fallopian tube of a woman to fertilise her eggs.

Well, they travel from the vagina through the cervix (which limits the number of sperms that travel) into the uterus and then to the womb. Therefore, this process involves collection of properly washed sperm cells in the laboratory and putting them directly into the uterus of a woman thereby reducing the long distance they are supposed to naturally travel. Generally, this is used when there is ejaculatory failure in man, retrograde ejaculation, male infertility, woman’s cervical mucus is hostile to sperm, when a man has antibodies in his sperm, couples who cannot have sex because of disability, and many other reasons.

Cost of Intrauterine Insemination in Nigeria

Even though many Nigerian couples have not fully imbibed this method, but awareness is created coupled by the fact that many couples can go out of their ways to seek solution to their problems.

This desperation to have children has contributed in no equal measures to make many Nigerian couples appreciate the laboratory process.

This medical process is practised in many private and government hospitals in Nigeria. Also, it costs between N50,000 to N200,000 depending on the hospital, patient’s age and cycle, and other charges may apply.

For example, the cost of IVF is as follows in Nordica Fertility Center:

Cost of Intrauterine Insemination in Nigeria
First cycle: N80,000
Second Cycle: N100,000
Third Cycle: N150,000

Just like the clinic in question, the cost varies from one hospital and clinic to another. Note that ALL payments must be made before the process commences.

If a client wants to undergo the entire process, it normally attracts a discount, and Nordica Fertility Clinic gives 10% discount.

Therefore, the cost of Intrauterine Insemination is okay but may not be affordable to many childless couples in Nigeria. But considering that you cannot buy your own child in the market, I think it is worth every kobo spent on it.

Conclusion

As we have noticed from the foregoing, Intrauterine Insemination which was once known as Artificial Insemination can now be successfully done in Nigeria at the hospitals listed above and many more hospitals across Nigeria.

The change of name is because Artificial Insemination can now occur in 4 stages – the vagina, the cervix, the uterus and finally, the fallopian tube. IUI is relatively more affordable than IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) which is more complicated.

Considering the fact that many couples have remained childless for years due to low sperm count, weakness of man’s sperm and many different reasons (listed above), IUI has become very important in handling such situations leading to childlessness.

The cost of Intrauterine Insemination is relatively okay in Nigeria considering the attendant benefits; therefore, it is advisable couples who cannot have babies meet their family doctors for advice and consequently, have this process carried out on them. Why not give it a try today?
