The Blues are anxious to add midfield depth this month, and Fernandez is a primary target. During the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the Argentine international drew the attention of various elite clubs.

Benfica have reiterated that they will only part ways with the 21-year-old if his £106 million release clause is satisfied, despite significant interest. A prior attempt by Chelsea to undercut that offer was failed, and a second bid has apparently been rejected.NYSC portal

Graham Potter’s side reportedly gave Benfica the opportunity to sign Ziyech and reinforce their ranks with Santos and Fofana, who are due to sign this month, for the balance of the season. The proposition was promptly rejected, with Benfica stating that they are not a finishing school for other teams and that they are not interested in providing loans.

Fernandez has already committed to move to Stamford Bridge this month, which has infuriated Rui Costa, the sporting director of Benfica. It is believed that the atmosphere at the bargaining table is tense, with all parties eager to stand their ground.JAMB portal

Since then, negotiations between the teams have fallen down, forcing Chelsea to reconsider whether they are willing to pay Fernandez’s release clause or look elsewhere. Of course, their Premier League competitors’ interest in their top target will also play a role.

The Blues are interested in Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo of Brighton, but it may be difficult to get either player considering that Roberto De Zerbi’s team is presently in first place and has dreams of playing in Europe next season. The Seagulls have also made it clear that they will not consider offers for either World Cup star.JAMB Result

Chelsea could revisit their pursuit of West Ham captain Declan Rice before the end of the month. Rice has been a long-term target for Chelsea. The England international is unlikely to leave the Hammers before the conclusion of the season, but a substantial offer might test their resolve. The fact that David Moyes’ team is 17th in the table and only out of the relegation zone by virtue of goal differential could impact the club’s decision-making, as his worth will plunge if they end up in the Championship next season.
