FUPRE departmental cut off mark

The Uniben departmental cut off mark is the final minimum score expected from a candidate to get admission into his/her course of choice at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources.

This is purely based on the department or course involved. The FUPRE courses and cut off mark for admission is not static and its influenced by the following;

1. General Performance:

General performance among candidates aspiring for that course in both the SSCE, JAMB and Post UTME: The better the performance, the higher the department’s admission cut off mark. The final admission cut off mark is derived from the following;

A. WAEC/NECO/NABTEB GPA (grade points from the relevant O’level subjects).

B. Average between the JAMB score and the post utme screening score.

2. Admission Quota

FUPRE admission quota analysis

NOTE: The quota as seen on the JAMB official website are as follows:

  1. 45% by merit
  2. 35% by a catchment area
  3. 20% by educationally less developed states (ELDS)

See The Analysis Below.

Assuming twelve thousand candidates (12,000) choose FUPRE in UTME, and eight thousand (8,000) candidates score above the school’s UTME cut off marks, then the institution will conduct post UTME screening for the 8,000 candidates.

For instance, Let’s say FUPRE pegs her post UTME cut off mark at 35, and only has the capacity to admit 3,500 candidates.

If 6000 candidates pass the post UTME out of the 8,000 candidates, then the quota will be calculated as follows.

Quota by Merit: Admission by merit is awarded to candidates with the highest performance in UTME and the school’s post UTME screening (if any) plus any other requirements specified by the school’s board.

So, from the figures above, the merit quota will be:

45 x 3500 / 100

= 1,575 candidates.

These 1,575 will be admitted strictly based on merit.

Quota by catchment area (Indigene): Admission by catchment area is strictly for the indigene of Delta state and it makes up 35% of the total number of candidates to be admitted.

Let’s do the calculation.

35 x 3500 / 100

= 1,225

= 1,225 candidates will be considered for admission based on the catchment area.

Quota by state category (Educationally less developed state). This quota is reserved for candidates from some selected states in Nigeria, and it makes up 20% of the total candidates to be admitted.

20 x 3500 / 100

= 700

700 candidates will be considered for admission based on ELDS (Educationally Less Developed States).

States that fall under the “educationally less developed states”.

Twenty-three (23) states of the federation have been identified as Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS). These states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Ebonyi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kastina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara.

3. Catchment Area:

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, just like any other federal university in Nigeria favours candidates who are from the university’s catchment areas.

Based on the Nigerian educational system, a catchment area is simply the state your closest to your university either by geopolitical location or tribe. Say, for example, the University of Benin is in Benin_City, Edo State and states within this region (Edo States) are classified under FUPRE catchment area which will be listed below.

There are currently 5 states classified under the University of Benin catchment area for candidates seeking admission into this great institution. As said earlier, your admission into FUPRE is much easier when you are from any of the above states of origin.
