Nigerian e-passport application requirements and application procedures

In this guide, you will be put through the various requirements needed for the application and renewal of Nigerian e-passport.

Nigerian passports are issued to citizens (Nigerians) who wish to travel out of the country. Currently, Nigeria now offers only electronic passports for new passport applications. These electronic passports which we shorten as e-passport is classified as either standard or official e-passport depending on the intended use.

The official e-passport is primarily reserved for certain classes of government officials and Nigerian diplomats and can also be acquired the same way the standard e-passport is acquired.

Complete Procedures for applying for a Nigerian e-passport

Since the application is going to be done electronically through the use of the internet, it is assumed and well expected that you already have a laptop or any computer before you and also an internet access. So, before you begin, you have to get your computer first or a good smartphone, you can use a cybercafé where you will have internet access or you use your already subscribed modem.

After putting the prerequisites in place, we can then proceed.

1. Open your web browser (Firefox, chrome, safari, IE or any good browser) and visit the Nigeria Immigration Portal where you can start the application process. To access the portal, you can click HERE to get there directly or you can copy the link below and paste it in your browser

2. On the page which is opened after entering the link on your browser, select the type of passport you wish to apply for, either “Standard e-Passport” OR “Official e-Passport”, then click on ‘Start Application’ button.

3. On clicking the “start Application”, a form will appear on the next page to be loaded by your browser. Fill the Application form; check the ‘I ACCEPT FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS FORM’ check box and then click the “PRINT” Button to print filled form.

4. Click on ‘Submit Application’ button to view ‘Applicant details page’

5. Click on “Proceed to Online Payment

6. Click to select Payment Currency “Pay in Naira” or “Pay in Dollars” option then Click on ‘Continue’ button.

N/B: You have two choice of payment: either you use your debit or credit card (ATM Card) or you pay directly at a bank as will be seen in the procedures as we proceed.

7.Choose the currency you want to use for payment (Naira or US Dollars):

8. If you selected option to pay in Naira, you will be prompted to select PayType (payment method) which could be “Bank”, “Credit OR Debit card”.

A. If you intend to pay at a bank, select “Bank” and click continue,

i. View the list of participating banks and then click on ‘Continue’.

ii. Click the “Print Acknowledgment” button in order to print the “Payment Acknowledgment Slip” with Transaction ID, Application ID & Reference Number.

iii. With the copy of your Payment acknowledgement slip, proceed to a participating bank for payment (i.e any of the banks which were enlisted in “I” above).

iv. On making payment at the bank, you MUST be issued with an ‘approved payment platform provider’ receipt that contains a “Validation Number” because you will need the “Validation Number” in order to carryout confirmation of payment on the portal. (I will tell you how to use your Validation Number as we proceed)

B. If you intend to pay through Credit/Debit card, select “Credit/Debit card” and click continue,

i. You will be required to fill in your log-in credentials.

ii. After filling in, click “Login” button and you will be sent to the payment portal through which you can issue the payment.

iii. To proceed with the payment, click the “PAY” button.

iv. on clicking the “PAY” button, the payment portal will display application details, click on “Continue” button.

v. You will be redirected to “Value Card” payment page where you will provide information on your card like “Card number, Name on Card etc.” After providing the information required, Click on “OK” button

vi. After making the payment, the “Validation Number” is generated. Store it and use it to confirm the payment.  You can save the page to your system’s hard drive by clicking Ctrl+S simultaneously.

vii. You can also print a receipt by clicking the “Print the Receipt” button.

How to use your Validation Number

Now, we have completed our payment, it is now time for us to let them know that we have actually paid the stipulated amount. This is made possible through the Validation Number and that is why you must not lose your validation number.

So, after making the payment and having obtained the “Validation Number”, proceed to the NIS portal for confirmation of payment (NIS means Nigerian Immigration Service):

1.Go to the “Query your Application Payment Status” and enter your Passport Application ID and Reference No. You can use this LINK to arrive there directly or copy and paste in browser

2.If a “Validation Number” field appears, type in the number from your ‘approved payment platform provider’ receipt. Remember: Validation Number has been generated after payment through Bank also.

3.Click the “Search Record” button and you will be sent to the “Applicant’s Details” page where a date for your interview has been generated.

4.You can now print a Receipt or an Acknowledgement Slip by using the buttons on this page. (You will need them for your interview).

5.You will be presented with your NIS e-receipt or Acknowledgement Slip in a new window. Click on “Print” button to send a copy to the printer.

For Payment Outside of Nigeria

1. If you select a processing country other than Nigeria, your payment will be in US Dollars. You will be re-directed to an approved payment platform to complete your application and make your payment in US Dollars.

2. On confirmation of payment, proceed for Interview with relevant documents. Also note that your interview schedule, final e-receipt and acknowledgment slip are only accessible using your Validation Number.

How To Print Your NIS E-Receipt

1. On the portal home page, click on the ‘Query your application payment status’ link Or use this LINK

2. At the next page, select ‘Passport’ as an option under the ‘Application Type’ drop down

3. Enter the following details:

  • Application ID
  • Reference Number
  • Validation Number (if applicable)

4. Submit the details

5. Your full application details shall be returned

6. Scroll down the page and click on ‘Print receipt’

7. You will be presented with your NIS e-receipt in a new window

8. Click on ‘Print this receipt’ to send a copy to the printer

How To Generate Your Passport Guarantor’s Form

1. Click on passport guarantor’s form at the home page of the Nigeria Immigration Service

2. Enter reference and id number generated on the acknowledgment slip

3. Click Print to print out first page and next to print out second page (You will still be required to click the Print button)

General Documents Required For Interview:

For Standard Passport

  1. Local Government letter of identification.
  2. Birth certificate / age declaration.
  3. 2 recent colour passport photographs
  4. Guarantor’s form sworn to before a commissioner of Oaths / Magistrate / High Court Judge
  5. Parents’ letter of consent for minors under 16 years
  6. Marriage certificate where applicable
  7. Police report in case of lost passport
  8. Submit application with supporting documents to passport office / Embassy / High commission

For Official Passport

  1. Letter of introduction from appropriate State Government, Federal Government Ministry / Organization.
  2. Marriage certificate where applicable
  3. Police report in case of lost passport
  4. Letter of appointment / last promotion.
  5. Submit application with supporting documents to passport office / Embassy / High commission

Seamans Book Requirement

  1. Local Government letter of identification
  2. Birth certificate / age declaration
  3. 2 recent colour passport photographs
  4. Submit application with supporting documents to passport office / Embassy / High commission

Take Note:

  1. Acknowledgment slip & payment receipt plus 2 recent photographs are applicable in all cases
  2. Print out copy of duly completed application form
  3. Take printed and signed application forms to Passport office / Embassy / High Commission for further processing
  4. A guarantor must attach the following documents
  • Photocopy of Data page of Nigerian standard Passport
  • Driving License or National Identity Card
