The Nigerian Legion is an organization, made up of erstwhile service men. The Nigerian Legion was established by an Act, and was charged with the responsibility of catering for the ex-service men’s welfare.
Ex-service men are persons, that have distinguished themselves to participate in the wars, in which Nigeria participated.

These are the persons who considered themselves brave, ready to lay down their lives if need be provided Nigeria, as a nation can survive.
Some of these men have actually laid down their lives, they were killed during the Nigerian civil war in the 70s, while fighting to make sure that Nigeria remain one as a single political entity.
Quite a number of these men are still alive, but are retired from active service. It was as a result of their services to the nation, Nigeria that had led to the establishment of the Nigerian Legion for the purpose of taking case of these ex-service men, who are still alive, and the widows and the children whose husbands and fathers were killed during the war respectively.

What Are The Functions Of The Nigerian Legion?

The Nigerian Legion was established with some functions, assigned to it, to carry out so as to fulfilled the very purpose for which, the Nigerian Legion was established. However, in this article, I will be explaining some of these functions.

1. Nigerian Legion Promotes Welfare Of The Ex-Service Men

The most cardinal function of the Nigerian Legion was to ensure that, the welfare of every ex-service man was protected.
This particular function on the part of the Nigerian Legion was very important, since it was to help cater for the needs of the erstwhile service men in the country, in recognition of their selfless service to their father land.
The organization was to also make sure that, comradeship among the ex-service men is maintained and sustained. It was the sole responsibility of the Nigerian Legion to Foster this comradeship.

2. Establishes Hotels For Incapacitated Ex-Service Men

Another function of the Nigerian Legion falls under this category. It is also the function of the Nigerian Legion to make sure that, it established hostels for ex-service men.
We must not forget that these men were the same persons, who served this country selflessly. They were those men, who fought during the civil war, they were fighting to make sure that, Nigeria remained one as a single political entity, and so, there were some of these men, who as a result of this were made incapacitated, and frustrated.
These were the kind of ex-service men, that the Nigerian Legion was to build hostels for. Other ex-service men, who were to benefit from this provision, were those ex-service men, who appeared to be incapacitated, as a result of old age and illness.

3. Acquires Land And Establishes Agro-Based Industries

There was need for the ex-service men’s welfare to be adequately taking care of, and to achieve this, there was need for the availability of resources, both the financial resources and material resources.
One of the ways to actualize this duty on the part of the Nigerian Legion was to acquire land for the establishment of the agro-based industries in order to service this need of the erstwhile service men in the country.
That is why, it is the function of the Nigerian Legion to acquire land and establish agro-based industries and agricultural farms, as well as estates in any part of the country. The Nigerian Legion was to make sure that, these businesses are properly run and managed.

4. Establishes And Operates Large And Medium And Small Scale Businesses

This is another function of the Nigerian Legion. The Nigerian Legion was expected to establish businesses of different scales, as well as, operate large scale business and medium scale business and small scale business in any part of the country.
The purpose for the establishment of large scale business and medium scale business and small scale business was to earn resources, so as to be able to meet the demand of catering for the welfare of the ex-service men in the country, as well as, engage those strong ex-service men are their families in productive adventure by way of getting them gainfully employed or creating employment opportunities for them.

5. Establishes And Operates Intra And Inter-State Commercial Transportation

One of the major functions of the Nigerian Legion was that of not only catering for the welfare of every ex-service man in the country, but to also contribute to the Nigerian economy through the operation of businesses of all kinds provided, they were able to meet the demand of running such businesses with a view to achieve the organization’s goals and objectives.

6. Setting Up Of Commercial Ventures, Such As Supermarkets

The Nigerian Legion was also swaddled with the responsibility of operating other businesses and as well, carrying out some commercial ventures so as to cater for the needs of its members.
Some of these commercial ventures expected to be established and run by the Nigerian Legion were those of super-markets, and cold stores, and cafes, and lodging houses, as well as, refreshment bars.
The Nigerian Legion was expected to run these businesses, and take care of its members and by extension, contribute to the growth of Nigeria’s economy through their activities. However, the Nigerian Legion has indeed met this aspect of its responsibility.

7. Operating Limited Liability Companies

Another function of the Nigerian Legion was to run limited liability companies with a view to better the lots of its members.
It remained its duty to incorporate limited liability companies and operate same. Owing to the enormous responsibility of Nigerian government, it was a gigantic task on the part of Nigerian government to meet all the needs of the Nigerian Legion, and so  to ease such a burden on the part of Nigerian government, the Nigerian Legion was assigned a responsibility of incorporating limited liability companies and to operate same for the purpose of making profit so as to cater for its various needs.

Conclusion

It was as a result of their services to the nation, Nigeria that had led to the establishment of the Nigerian Legion for the purpose of taking case of these ex-service men, who are still alive, and the widows and the children, whose husbands and fathers were killed during the war respectively.
