1. Growing Population

The population of Nigeria grows every day. More people are advancing in age, those who were not up to eighteen of age as at last election have grown to become up to or more than eighteen years. INEC has to include these people in the recent register of voters.

As people form new settlements, INEC has to locate them wherever they are to make sure that they are not disenfranchised. This is a problem for INEC. Locating them may not be easy for INEC officials.

On the other hand, some people in INEC’s register must have died. INEC has to update its register to make sure that these people are removed from the register of voters.

2. COVID-19 Pandemic

The wind of the COVID-19 pandemic is still blowing. It is a great challenge for INEC to conduct elections amid the pandemic. The voters as well as INEC officials need protection. Taking few people in at a time means that INEC has to spend much time in the elections.

3. Electoral Acts

Though INEC is independent, it operates according to guidelines stipulated in the Nigerian constitution. The House of Assembly also enacts laws that can hinder INEC in its operations.

8. Poor Funding

Poor funding is a problem for INEC. INEC needs money for almost everything. To move people and materials to different locations, INEC needs money.

The cost of production is high. For INEC to do an effective job, it needs many hands. These people must be well paid. Otherwise, they would mess things up. Therefore, poor funding is a problem for INEC.

9. Multi-party System

The multi-party system that our constitution supports is now a problem for INEC. Everybody wants to form a political party. In the last election, INEC found it difficult to fix all the parties on one ballot paper.

The multi-party system is now a waste of money to INEC. The money that it would have used for other meaningful things is now used in overseeing the activities of parties that have nothing to offer. 10. Coming up to International Standards

Undoubtedly, Nigeria is the giant of Africa. The whole world sees Nigeria as the pacesetter in the African continent. Therefore, it behoves Nigeria to come up to international standards.

Whenever there are elections in Nigeria, the whole world wants to witness them.  Many people are eager to see how things are being done. They frown at what Nigeria does if they find any flaw.

Therefore, INEC must try its best to bring the electoral system of Nigeria to international standards. However, it is not easy for INEC. Bringing the Nigerian electoral system to international standards involves so many things.WAEC Result

Firstly, INEC will have to travel far and wide collecting data and analysing them to see how things are done in other countries. A comparative study will give INEC insight into what is obtainable all over the world. Thus, it will discover where Nigeria is not getting it right.

Secondly, INEC must be ready to spend money on whatever it needs in coming up to the required standards. It will need to train and retrain its officials. It has to buy all the technological gadgets it needs to come up to international standards. You can then see that this poses a great challenge to INEC.
