Orientation happens at camp, which is usually for three weeks. Camp life can be very interesting and equally very frustrating. So many factors are responsible for how your camp life turns out to be. The environment might be very conducive or annoying, the soldiers might be very understanding or harsh, the climate might be favourable or otherwise, you might be prepared.. or not prepared.

Regardless of the state you are posted to, the process is basically the same. The following tips are designed to make your life in camp a comfortable one.

Tip 1: DONT EXPECT COMFORT IN CAMP!
Yes, I know I said these tips are designed to make your camp life comfortable, but ‘comfortable’ here is comparatively used. Camp is not your house, and for that three weeks, you are under the auspices of the camp officials and soldiers, so don’t expect camp to be as comfy as your home. You are going to make use of bunk beds in an hostel filled with people from different states. You are going to wake up earlier than you are probably used to. You are going to do morning drills and learn how to march. You are going to be subjected to the substandard kitchen food, or expensive meals at maami market. Maami market is any military market.. or camp market that is usually of a temporary nature. They are only there when you are there. Food is usually quite expensive there. The toilets and bathrooms might not be very conducive, you will be exposed to very funny insects and you will at one point or the other get punished by soldiers. You will have to stand under the sun and sing the ever-annoying NYSC anthem, especially when your camp is expecting a dignitary. In summary, it is not going to be as comfortable as home. But you can make it comfortable, relatively.

– Tip 2: TAKE ENOUGH CASH WITH YOU

Camp life is survivable if you have cash. Things are more expensive than normal. Sometimes even times 2 or 3. Take enough cash with you, but be very careful with your money. Make sure you buy a waist bag where you can keep your money and valuables for the time period. Don’t expect to meet ATMs in camp or even close by. Although you might be lucky that your camp is exposed enough. Also, some people operate POS machines in camp, where you can use your ATM card to transfer money to their account and receive the cash, for a fee… usually not more than 5%.

Tip 3: MAKE ALL YOUR PRINTINGS BEFORE CAMP

Printing and photocopies are usually too expensive in camp. Just a page can cost as high as N600 or N500. A single page. While photocopying goes for about N20. Do your printings before you go to camp and make enough photocopies of your documents. This will greatly reduce your expenses in camp. Although you will still have to make some signed document photocopies in camp, but trust me, you won’t feel the heat as much.

Tip 4: TAKE ENOUGH PASSPORTS TO CAMP.

Just about 8 copies can go for as high as N1200 or N1000. Be wise. Take your passports to camp. Although, before you leave, you might still have to take some NYSC crested vest passports which you will use at the secretariat.

Tip 5: GO TO CAMP EARLY… OR MAYBE NOT.

Going to camp early has it’s advantages. For one, you would get to select a good matrass and good bed space and bunk. You will also complete your registration on time and start getting to know people. But that’s just about it. Coming early means that you would start drills and marching on time. You will be under the hot sun while some of your mates will just be arriving. Some people still even stroll into camp 3 days after camp opening, and they still have no problems. Choose which you want.

TIP 6: YOU CAN ESCAPE STRESS

Yes, I know you must have heard of how some people don’t even experience the rigourous drills and punishments. You can escape these by joining some departments in camp. The first department is the camp clinic. Do you have any experience with clinic work or did you study anything relating to pharmacy or medicine? Do not put this to waste. Join the clinic, and you might not even have to step on the parade ground till you leave camp.

The second department is the OBS. The Orientation Broadcasting Service, or whatever it might be called in your camp. This is like a radio station that disseminates information to anybody who cares to listen on camp. Their OAPs and technical guys are usually in the studio and hardly go to the parade ground.

Also, you can join socials and most times be at rehearsals. Whether you are active or not at the rehearsals, it does not matter. It will relieve you of some parade ground stress. Although you still have to be present to morning drills and the likes.

Finally, you can wear mufti and go to stay in maami market. However, I don’t advise this, but some people do it, and it saves them some stress.

Tip 7: ENGAGING IN STRENOUS CAMP ACTIVITIES DOES NOT INFLUENCE POSTING

The only person that might have his posting guaranteed is the parade commander, which might not even be the case sometimes. The common belief is that if you engage in parades or special activites or this or that… you will be favoured in your posting. Lol. This is false. Don’t kill yourself over nothing. Although, coincidences might occur where someone that did a strenous activity, gets posted to a very nice place. Most people ‘sort’ and ‘settle’ to get posted to their places of choice.. and if you do not ‘know somebody’, and you believe that marching your way to oblivion will guarantee your posting, then you are on your own. Lol.

Tip 8: TRAVEL LIGHT

Make sure that all your load is contained in one big bag, with a little more space to put your kits when you finally get them in camp. You do not need so much things. Besides, you most likely will still go home after camp before you eventually resume at your PPA. Place of Primary Assignment.

– Tip 9: GET TO THE HALL ON TIME

When lectures start, it is advisable that you get to the hall early, so that you can find a chair to sit. Trust me, standing for 5 hours is no joke.

– Tip 10: NYSC Camp Requirements – WHAT YOU NEED TO TAKE ALONG

Please do not forget any of the following:

1. Your documents: This includes your green card, your call up letter (both in coloured printing), photocopies, your Statement of result Original and photocopies. Also, take all other relevant academic document including JAMB and WAEC results. They are not necessary, but just take at least a copy of all relevant academic documents.

2. Passports
3. Toiletries: Your soap, brush, toothpaste, sponge, tissue, etc.
4. Your Spoon and Plate ( Preferably a cooler with inner plate). You can buy cooler at camp, though.
5. Comfort Materials: These are things that make things comfortable for you on a normal day. Your perfume, roll on, deodorant, slippers, comb, hair brush, body cream, hair cream, etc.
6. Soldiers usually frown at designer wrist watches, make up and other fashion effects.
7. Your Whites! You will be given two pairs of socks, a pair of khaki trousers and khaki top, an NYSC crested white vest, two plain white vests, two white shorts, NYSC cap, a Jungle book and white can shoe. You should buy in addition to this, any number of whites that you feel will make your life in camp easier. A white rubber shoe is good too, because it is easy to clean.
8. Underwear: You boxer shorts and singlets for guys. Panties and bra and other conveniences for ladies. Please ensure you don’t use flashy underwear colours, because your whites will be really transparent. No.. Not that transparent. Lol.
9. Mosquito net, bedsheets, towel, insect repellants, light malaria drugs, light cough and catarrh drugs, and any other thing that might come in handy.
10. Money… Money… Money.
