Floods kill over 20, displace thousands in Ethiopia

Heavy rainfall has caused severe flash flooding in the Somali region of Ethiopia, leading to over 20 deaths and displacing more than 12,000 individuals, as reported by regional authorities on Saturday.

The floods have damaged essential infrastructure, including roads and bridges, making it challenging to access affected families, stated the Somali Regional State Communication Bureau. Losses have been reported in terms of property, crops, and livestock.

The Bureau mentioned, “Nearly 20 lives have been lost due to the flooding, and around 12,000 families have been displaced.”InformationGuideNigeria

Weather forecasts suggest a continued threat of flooding in the region. Last month, OCHA, the UN’s humanitarian agency, predicted that Eastern Africa might experience higher than usual rainfall between October and December, attributing it to the El Nino effect.
