Subscribers fail to use 98.75 million SIMs – Report

According to recent industry statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission, telecom consumers abandoned 98.75 million registered SIMs in the month of July.Information Guide Nigeria

This is because, for the third consecutive month in 2021, there were more than 300 million SIM cards in use worldwide (307.36 million).

Additionally, the total number of active lines increased to 208.61 million in July as 2.52 million new users joined the active network on a nationwide level.

There were 98.89 million unused registered sims as of June 2022. Only 206.08 million of the 304.98 million Sims in use that month were actually in use.

This comes after a protracted easing of the impact of the National Identification Number and Subscriber Identity Module policy on the telecoms sector, with active customers increasing by 11.27 percent (21.13 million) on an annual basis.

Gbenga Adebayo, the chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria, has previously explained unused lines to our correspondent by saying, “It is a combination of several things. It may be the case that some persons have extra lines they never utilise.

“Traditionally, a lot of people carry more than one phone. Some have an office line; some have private lines but use one more often than the other. Some are in the Diaspora, who though they hold Nigerian SIM cards, are not residents here.

“Some are students, who for half of the term are not around. It also depends on how and why these lines are said to be unused; and for what period, because you could have someone not using their lines for three months, and after three months start to use them again.”
