More than 17.5 million people participated in the survey, with 57.5% favoring the Twitter CEO’s resignation and 42.5% opposing it. The poll ended at approximately 6:20 a.m. ET.

Musk had yet to comment on the results of the poll as of early Monday morning. “As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it,” he tweeted late Sunday.

The poll was conducted as Musk faced increasing criticism after Twitter restricted users from promoting accounts on other social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram, and Truth Social, before removing the restriction from its policy page.

Following Musk’s Oct. 27 takeover, which has subsequently resulted in the reinstatement of some far-right accounts, the suspension of journalists, and mass layoffs, a number of Twitter users began posting links to accounts on other social media platforms in an effort to leave the platform.

“We recognize that many of our users are active on other social media platforms,” Twitter support had tweeted Sunday. “However, we will no longer allow free promotion of certain social media platforms on Twitter.”JAMB portal

After facing widespread criticism following the announcement, Musk appeared to contradict the policy, saying: “Casually sharing occasional links is fine, but no more relentless advertising of competitors for free, which is absurd in the extreme.”

By Sunday evening, the page on the platform containing the revised policy language had been replaced with a “page not found” 404 error message, indicating deleted or relocated material. Sunday evening, references to the ban on external social media vanished without explanation from Twitter Support’s feed.NYSC portal

The restriction was mocked as ironic, coming from a CEO who had pledged to be a “absolute free speech absolutist.”

It drew such quick condemnation, particularly from previous champions of Musk’s leadership, that the billionaire swore not to make additional policy changes without a Twitter poll.

“My apologies. Won’t happen again,” he tweeted, before launching his new poll asking whether he should step down.

In addition to huge layoffs, Twitter has been scrutinized for botching the rollout of paid user verification and, more recently, for suspending six journalists. Musk resurrected their accounts after Twitter users voted in favor of doing so in a previous poll.JAMB Result
