How To Locate Any Destination In Nigeria

This article discusses some of the ways through which you can find or locate any destination in Nigeria. However, due to the vast territory of the country, the city of Lagos would be used to represent the whole.

Finding your way around Lagos can be daunting and frustrating especially if you are not from around the place, or you have never been to the part you intend to go.

Apart from the frustration that comes from feeling and being unsure or speculative, you could also lose time and spend extra money; and for those who drive private cars, their precious fuel (if you know what I mean).

For these unfortunate outcomes, the need to not allow ignorance rob you is very essential. Yes, Lagos is a big place but with the right information it could be as familiar as the back of your palm. Here are some ideas to help you get around Lagos easily and always on time:

1. Ask Google

Google maps is one of the must-have apps every individual should have installed on his phone or PC. It would interest you to know that every turn, every bend, every nook and cranny of the big Lagos city, and even Nigeria is captured in the app.

With that much information you can get anywhere without any hassle. Using the app is pretty easy, all you have to do is type in your present location and also your desired location.

It would show the route, the distance, time frame of travel (via commercial or private car), etc. Interestingly, the moment you begin your journey it begins with you, moving in real time.

Google maps does not just show you the route, it also captures names of businesses, shops, banks, clubs, etc, and these are good landmarks to help you on your way.

It is very reliable and efficient that even taxi companies use it to navigate the way. If they are using it, you should to. It only requires an internet connection to function.

2. Use signboards

They are everywhere or should I say almost everywhere. These should help you find your way too. So be on the lookout for them on the highways, and on the streets.

Obviously, signs differ in terms of size and look depending on the area you are or are heading to. Because of this, don’t get used to the way a particular sign looks like and assume that that is how all the others are too.

You may just be disappointed. Don’t let changes in case, colour or size deceive you. Also, it is expected that signs like that should be hoisted on some sort of stand for all to see, but prepare yourself to survey walls, gates, or other materials that can be written on.

As I said, it depends on the locale. Don’t for a second think that the way it is in the ‘tush’ part of town is the way it is at the slums. Again, you may be disappointed.

3. Inquire

No man is an island and no man knows it all. These are infallible truths. With this in mind, at any point you feel unsure of how to locate your destination, the people you see around have what it takes to put you through.

I know this may not entirely be true because some people you ask may be in the dark too, that is why I prefer to ask any area boy in sight.

You see, there is a reason people call them area boys. It is because they know the area like they know their first name. Looking for where to board a particular bus?, ask them; where to buy a specific item? Ask them; where a street is; the closest bus stop; bukka; just ask them.

I have also noticed that they are always more than happy to help. You therefore have no excuse for getting lost or not locating your destination. The solution to your dilemma are before you. Ask them.

4. Know the place

This should be the first thing you confirm before setting out. Knowing the place has nothing to do with with whether you have gone there before, but it has everything to do with spelling, pronunciation and any other detail that may be useful.

I can tell you off the top of my head about 4 Balogun bus stops I know; I am betting there are many others. It would therefore be a bad idea to go out with a popular and incomplete address as 14, Balogun street, Ikeja. There are other Baloguns…so which one?

Make sure you have the full address of your destination and ensure it is not identical to another one. Inform whoever is conveying you if there are more than one, timely information prevents avoidable mishaps.
