Although milling machine designs are often CAD directed, but many of these milling machines are CNC-operated. However, most common milling machines are those that are traditionally-automated, as well as, those that are used manually.

Milling machines are known for their dynamic movement, and that include the tool and the work piece. Besides, a good number of milling machines can carry out multi-axis machining.

More so, since milling machines varies in orientation, and operation as well as, application, milling machines therefore are of varying functions and also have different operating principles.

What Are The Uses Of The Milling Machines?

Milling machines are actually used for milling. Having said that, let us look at the tooling.

Tooling

Milling machines can be made to be outfitted with many other tool heads so as to accomplish various needs of machining.

A good number of these tool heads for example, are cutters, and rounding mills, and fluted mills as well as, ball end mills.

More so, many of these milling machines normally do have rotating tool ends, which made them change based on whether or not the needed task computer programming has communicated with the machine, as to when to change its tooling.

Although, our focus in this article, is to look at the milling machines prices in Nigeria, but we have to at least have some basic knowledge, as to what milling machines are.

The various tooling that are being used in milling machines are actually dependent on the material and the desired shape.

Reason is obvious, since materials such as wood and that of steel do have diverse physical properties, hence there is need for tool bits for the purpose of properly machining the materials.

Because there is consequence, if the milling machine used a particular tool bit that is very weak and is not strong to machine steel, the likelihood is that, the tooling, including the machine will get damaged.

Again, in the case of softer materials, tooling that is too strong for it can also damage the work piece. Nevertheless, ‘cutter’ is the basic tooling bit on a milling machine.

What Is Cutter?

A cutter is simply a shaped bar with saw teeth. You can identify it by its saw teeth. When on operation, the cutter will rotate very fast in order to cut down materials and also shape these materials.

The cutter however, is aligned to mandrel, and this mandrel can also be called an arbour or mandrill. It is a shaped bar with different sizes, and different lengths and ending. Mandrill or arbour is what holds the cutter strongly and firmly.

Please note that, the ending of the milling cutter’s saw can be adjusted, that is, it can be spaced, it can be sized and it can be oriented in many and different ways.

For example, the milling cutter’s teeth can be either positioned in a straight up-and-down orientation, or it can be positioned in an angled in a helical orientation.

Nevertheless, straight milling cutter’s teeth are preferable to helical milling cutter’s teeth in operations, particularly on denser materials, while helical milling cutter’s teeth is used to create smooth cuts on materials that are soft.

There are also a number of different cutters within these categories, and these include, dense end cutters, and t-slot cutters, as well as angle cutters.

And another thing to note here is that, cutters are subject to various standardized sizes, and CAT size is the most commonly used standardization category of cutter.

Before we look at the milling machines prices in Nigeria, let us consider the types of milling machine in Nigeria.

Types of Milling Machines

What is used to categorize milling machines are their orientation to work piece, as well as the degree of motion. Therefore, many of these milling machines are categorized based on their orientation to their work piece and also that of degree of motion.

Knee-Type

As the name implies, Knee-Type milling machines are placed in a vertical workspace, and they are supported by the knee, and can be adjusted vertically. Although, the saddle is supported by the knee, it can be adjusted in order to make sure that there is a customizable workspace.

Plain Vertical and Horizontal

Plain vertical and horizontal milling machines that have a standard work surface can necessarily be oriented either vertically or horizontally.

The tooling assembly for instance, is affixed on a turret, and also on swivel, which is positioned parallel to the workspace. The purpose of the turret and the swivel is to allow for the tool to move around the work piece freely in order to enforce tight tolerances.

Universal Horizontal Milling Machine

Another one is called, universal horizontal milling machine. A universal horizontal milling machine for instance, is different from that of the plain horizontal milling machine, and the reason is that, universal horizontal milling machine has a kind of table swivel housing, and this table swivel housing is what allows the table to move.

The table swivel is moving at 45 degrees, that is, from the standard horizontal position. Hence, easy angular or helical milling operations is achieved via the work piece movement.

Ram-Type and Universal Ram-Type Milling Machines

This type of milling machine is used for the purpose of allowing the tooling to make sure that, it position itself on a larger range of space with respect to the work piece.

The ram-type milling machine has, this time, not table swivel housing like that of the universal horizontal milling machine, but a spindle on a movable housing.

This spindle on a movable housing is what allows the movement within the set horizontal plane. Whereas, the universal ram-type milling machine is of the swivel housing which helps in increasing the range of cutting movements.

Swivel Cutter Head Ram-Type Milling Machine

Last but not the least of milling machine I will discuss in this article, is the swivel cutter head ram-type milling machine.

This particular type of milling machine is that type of milling machine that is made to rotate completely from a vertical position to that of horizontal position.

The swivel cutter head ram-type milling machine can be identified through the movement of the worktable, and the movement of this worktable is what provides the operator of the machine with liberal degree of motion and orientation.
