Akwa Ibom born Imaobong Nse Uko fulfilled expectations by coasting home to gold in the women’s 400m event on day four of the ongoing World Athletics U20 Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.

Nse Uko came to the Championships as the fastest among the contenders following the 51.70 seconds she ran to win the gold at the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival in April and lived up to pre-race hype by becoming the fourth Nigerian to win the category after Fatimah Yusuf in 1990 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria and Olabisi Afolabi in Lisbon, Portugal in 1994 and Folashade Abugan in Poland 2008.

Akwa Ibom Born Imaobong Nse Uko Wins 400m Gold At World Athletics U20 Championships

The Akwa Ibom athlete won heat three of the women’s 400 metres in 52.33 seconds.
The 17-year-old is through to the final and will be hoping to win her first international title at the tournament.
This is her second international appearance after taking part in the 4×400 metres mixed relay event at the just concluded Tokyo Olympics.
The time further extended her record as the fastest 400m U18 athlete in the world in 2021 and the 17th fastest in the Nigerian alltime list.

Imaobong hails from Ikot Abasi No1 in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Uko on Wednesday helped Nigeria claim gold in the mixed 4×400 metres relay at the ongoing World Under 20 Athletics Championship in Kenya, and will be aiming for another gold medal in the women’s 400 metres final.

Fresh from completing her secondary education at the Apostolic Church Secondary School, Ikot Oku Nsit, Imaobong will soon link up with Baylor University.

The 17-year-old from Etinan, Akwa Ibom State, is a two-time national 400 metres champion at the National Sports Festival and recently represented Nigeria at the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Meet Daniel Umoette, a certified world athletics who discovered Imaobong Nse Uko during the Akwa Ibom State Sports Competition and adopted to train her for free.

Coach Umoette persuaded the family of Imaobong who reside in Ibeno but are from Ikot Abasi No 1, Etinan to release Imaobong for more training.

Imaobong moved to Uyo, was trained every evening by this coach after she came back from school. Today, Imaobong is a star representing Nigeria.

Coach is training several other Imaobong in the state.
