Insecurity, Naira fluctuation cause Customs shortfall

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has been unable to collect over N400 billion out of its N3.01 trillion in 2022.

The Comptroller General Hameed Ali (Rtd) made this known to reporters in a press conference on the World Customs Global Conference alongside the World Customs Organization, Secretary General, Kunio Mikuriya in Abuja.

The theme of the conference was: ‘Enabling Customs in Fragile and Conflict Affected Situations.’

General Hameed Ali (Rtd) said “it is difficult because when you look at trade, it is a fluid.”

He continued: “I give you a rough idea. We were expecting N3.01 trillion last year, but because of so many factors and variables that came into play, we were not able to make that. We made about N2.6 trillion. The shortfall of N400 billion plus is due to a lot of factors.”NYSC portal

The fluctuation of the Naira was one and the fiscal policies that kept giving waivers and concessions were some of the factors he listed.JAMB Result

He said that some of those approvals that were given and enacted by the law didn’t get the chance to get collected.

Ali added: “So, if you add all these factors together and look at what we have got, you can now come to a conclusion about the amount that would have come to government is out there due to these factors.
