Premier League chief refuses to confirm whether Newcastle ownership is being re-investigated

A recent report from talksport has it that Richard Masters has refused to confirm or deny if the Premier League is investigating Newcastle United’s Saudi Arabian ownership.Information Guide Nigeria

Masters, the Premier League’s chief executive, was speaking to the digital, culture, media and sport select committee when he was questioned about the controversial 2021 takeover. The league approved Newcastle’s sale after they said they had received ‘legally binding assurances that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will not control Newcastle’.Information Guide Nigeria

However, multiple clubs from the top flight are believed to have asked for clarification after a US court case suggested otherwise. The case involves Saudi-owned LIV Golf, which is run by Newcastle’s chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan.NYSC Portal

Documents submitted on behalf of the Saudi Public Investment Fund [PIF] this month say they should be regarded ‘as a foreign state’ and that Al Rumayyan is ‘a sovereign instrumentality of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a sitting minister of the Saudi government’.NYSC Portal

This was put to Masters at the select committee, to which he responded: “I’m afraid I can’t really comment on it.

“Even to the point of saying ‘is the Premier League investigating’ it, I can’t really comment. “Obviously we are completely aware and you are correct about the general nature of the undertakings we received at the point of takeover but I can’t really go into it at all.JAMB Result

“The only time when the Premier League comments publicly on regulatory issues is when there’s a charge and at the end of the process when an independent panel has decided whether any rule breaches have actually taken place. The investigatory process we don’t talk about at all.”JAMB Result
