What is an Affidavit?

Types of Affidavits in Nigeria

  • Affidavits of facts: An affidavit of facts is filed to bring certain facts to the attention of a court for authorization.
  • Affidavits for loss of documents: This affidavit verifies the loss of documents or other property
  • Affidavits for change of name: This affidavit is used to declare a change of name

  • Affidavit of good conduct: This affidavit is used to verify good conduct

How to obtain an Affidavit

To obtain a sworn affidavit, follow the procedures below:WAEC result

  • Step 1: Visit a court’s Commissioner for Oaths or notary public.
  • Step 2: You will be required to pay a processing fee for the affidavit
  • Step 3: Obtain your receipt of payment for the affidavit
  • Step 4: You will be required to provide a valid means of identification e.g. National identity card
  • Step 5: You will be asked a series of questions by the commissioner of oath or Notary to confirm your statements. You may also be asked to present some additional evidence
  • Step 6: After checking your statement, you will be required to swear to the accuracy of the information in the affidavit, and sign the affidavit.
  • Step 7: The affidavit will then be signed, stamped, and sealed by the commissioner of oaths or Notary
  • Step 8: Finally, your affidavit will be issued to you.JAMB form

Who can issue an Affidavit in Nigeria?

The following people have been authorized to issue and swear affidavits in Nigeria:

  • Chief Justice of NigeriaJAMB Result
  • Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria
  • President and Justices of the Court of Appeal
  • Judges of the Federal High Court
  • Notaries Public
