Having identified incompetent teachers as a cardinal problem of teaching business studies in Nigeria, I will be in this article, discuss quite a number of other problems facing the teaching of business studies in Nigeria, but before then, let us look at what this education is all about.

What Is Business Studies?

Looking at what business studies is, it is the process of creating a means by which business knowledge and beneficial values are transfer from one person to another person.
In other words, business studies can be referred to as the aggregate of all the processes that involved the development of a person’s abilities, and attitudes and other forms of his behaviour that has to do with positive value towards the society in which he belonged.
It is simply a process whereby, knowledge is dissimilated for the purpose of ensuring social control or for the purpose of guaranteeing the rational direction of the society or even both. Now having said that, what then are the problems of teaching business studies in Nigeria?

Problems Of Teaching Business Studies:

There are some issues in the Nigerian education system, attributed to the problems of teaching business studies in Nigeria, and some of these issues are:

1. Problems Of Business Studies Development

The problem of business educational development in Nigeria is that of taking absolute responsibility for the programme by relevant authorities.
It somehow seems that there are some conflict of interest among those who manage business studies programme in the country at various levels of education.

2. Problem Of Improper Regulation Of Business Studies Programme

Another issue identified as the problem of teaching business studies in Nigeria is that of lack of proper regulation the programme, and this as result to the decline in the quality of business studies programme in the country. Improper regulation of business studies, in most case, do bring about interference between the state government and federal government, and even at the local government level thus, hampered the smooth running of the programme across Nigerian schools.

3. Political Interference

Another problem of business studies programme in Nigerian schools today is that there is political interference. Whether anybody believes it or not, politics is another key force taking place in the Nigerian education system.
Today, you will agree with me that the majority of Nigerian educational institutions are established and as well, run in different states of the federation on political ground.
Take for instance, admission into Nigerian universities, and colleges, and polytechnics, even colleges of Education are mostly guided by Nigerian politicians, rather than students’ academic performance.
Many parents today will use their political offices and their political influences to make sure that their children gain admission into colleges, and also graduate out of colleges.

4. Poor Preparation Of Business Studies’ Students

Poor preparation of business studies students has been identified as another problem of teaching business studies in Nigeria. and as a result, this inadequate of students preparation has however, led to examination malpractices on the part of the students.
Educationists in the country have identified poor preparation of the students of business studies as the cause of examination malpractices in Nigerian schools.
They have looked at the poor preparation of business studies students and examination malpractices as another set back in business studies programme in the country.

5. Riding Costs Of Business Studies Programme

Another problem of the teaching of business studies in Nigeria is the rising costs of business studies programme in the country.
Given  the rising costs of business studies, in terms of school fees, and enrolment fees, and the cost of books and other business studies materials, business studies students and even their own parent are not even want themselves to be held back by whatever reasons, particularly, when it has to do with deficit or failure in any area of the required course, in fact, they do go to any length or extra miles in ensuring they succeeded. This indeed has remained a problem of teaching business studies in the country.

6. Business Studies Teacher’s Indulgence In Immoral Acts

In other cases, some business studies teachers at the most level school are involved in some unlawful acts. They will rather encourage the students to contribute money, which they called, cooperation fees in order to help them or secure them with some assistance during writing examinations, than preparing the students for their examination.
Since these teachers know that, perhaps, they have failed in preparing these students efficiently, they with have no other option than to coerce them and collect this money, and if you think about it, this is another problem of teaching business studies in Nigeria.

7. Inadequate Business Studies Teachers

Although most of the colleges and universities and polytechnics  lack basic learning infrastructure and facilities and even a complete set of business studies teachers, in most cases too, most of these colleges lack adequate teachers, for instance, a school that has the services of an English Language teacher may lack the services of a Mathematics teacher.
Again, in some instances, an English language teacher in a school may teach Literature, and Christian Religious Education and even Government.
This problem is one of the more reasons why nobody has the gut to quarry the event of mass promotion syndrome in Nigerian schools, you know what? This problem has existed in schools because the Nigerian education system itself is not balanced.

8. Poor Funding Of Business Studies

Poor funding of business studies in Nigeria has been also identified as one of the problems of teaching business studies in the country.
This poor funding, or what I may call, gross underfunding of the business studies programme in the country is so pathetic.
There is no how this aspect of education can be developed in the country without adequate funding of its programme hence, this has posed as one of the problems of the teaching of business studies in Nigeria. It is proper funding of business studies programme in the country that will get the system out of the woods.

9. Lack Of Maintenance Of College Facilities

The abandonment or the negligence of the maintenance of the college physical facilities; and instructional facilities and even the improvement of teaching and learning conditions have also been identified as another problem of teaching business studies in Nigeria.
Facilities are deteriorating in many of these Nigerian schools, for example, classrooms blocks, and libraries and also laboratories are all something one cannot write home about, all these problems actually lead to the declining problem in academic standards in the country.

Conclusion

There is a clarion call, Nigerian government, corporate bodies and non-governmental organizations to support business studies programme in the country.
