What is BVN?

If you already have a bank account in Nigeria, then the term “BVN” shouldn’t be new to you. BVN is the shortened form of Bank Verification Number.

As earlier stated it was introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria in February 2014 as a means to fight or curb illegal or fraudulent transactions in the banking system.

The BVN is a verified important number, it’s as important as your account number (possibly more important than it), or your National Identification Number (NIN).WAEC Result

This is the reason why people are often advised to guard and protect their BVN since it carries personal or sensitive information about them and it’s linked to all their Bank accounts.

How to retrieve BVN without phone number via mobile app

All the banks in Nigeria have mobile apps that help their customers carry out banking transactions with ease—they don’t have to visit the bank each time they want to perform banking transactions.

Your bank has its own mobile app and all you have to do is download the app from the Google PlayStore or Apple Store, install and register the app. Once you are done with the registration, log into the app.

Once you are logged in you’ll find your BVN on the home screen. If you don’t find it, take your time to go through the app, checking the menu and other sections of the app to find it—it usually isn’t difficult to find.JAMB Result

However, if you can’t find it, you can always contact your bank’s customer care through the app and ask them where you can find your BVN on the app.

Just like the internet banking platform, the approach is also free all that’s required is data to access the app.

If you don’t have an internet-enabled device, then using any of the methods outlined above will be impossible. In that case, the only option left to retrieve your BVN without your phone number is by visiting any of your bank’s branches.

When you arrive at the bank, request for your BVN and you’ll be asked to provide those requirements. Once you provide it your BVN will be issued to you. In some banks you might be asked to bring passports, so carry them along with you as a contingency (backup) plan.

Note: In the case where your SIM got stolen, you’ll have to change the number on your BVN—to prevent your account from being hacked by hackers—and you can do it by visiting your bank branch with a sworn affidavit for change of phone number and a valid means of identification.
