Ways to Improve the National Assembly

1. Listening to the People

The beauty of democracy is the fact that it is the type of government where the people that are governed have a say in their government. Therefore, to improve the National Assembly, the legislature must listen to the people who put them there. They are not there to represent themselves.Improve the National Assembly

For improvement’s sake, their say must be the people’s say. Before they deliberate on any issue, they should first go to their constituencies and seek the opinion of their people. They would then go to the Assembly and speak for these people.

Reports have it that most of the Assemblymen and women are not accessible to their people. Nigerians do not know what goes on in the House. The legislatures do not make things public. The National Assembly is not a secret cult. It is a place where people who care can go and learn. They should not keep their plenaries secret. Thus, to improve the National Assembly, the legislature must let Nigerians know what goes on in the House and have their say on it.

2. Making Laws

To improve the National Assembly, the legislatures must make laws. They should know that the people put them there to make laws for them. They should make laws that are for the betterment of Nigeria. Nigerians will love them when they make good laws that alleviate the suffering of the people.BBN Channel on DSTV – What Channel is BBN on GOTV

Nigerians are suffering. See the area of security. What are the laws that the legislatures have made concerning the security situation of the country? What about the area of employment, what have they done? Then talk about the Nigerian economy in general. There is nothing in Nigeria that a common hundred kobo can buy now.

The last thing in the market is almost selling for two hundred naira. Kerosene is now a no-go area. In addition, cooking gas is a no-go area, too. How do they want Nigerians to feed? The National Assembly members should take on their primary responsibility and make good laws for Nigerians.

3. Making Room for Checks and Balances

The legislative assembly members are not proactive enough. The Presidency is very loose. Nobody controls him. Checks and balances are one of the duties of the parliament. As such, to improve the National Assembly, lawmakers should make room for checks and balances.GOTV Decoder Price – How Much is GOTV Decoder 2022

4. Scraping the Lower Chamber

In Nigeria, the House of Representatives is redundant. The people there are merely wasting Nigeria’s meagre resources. They are not needed at all!

Recall that they have no power to make any law. The Senators must approve the laws they make before they become governing laws. They debate bills, pass their resolutions to the Senators, and the Senate debate the same bills that the House of Representatives has already debated and passes them back to them. Finally, they make a combined sitting and finalize their resolutions, a mere waste of time.

Nigeria should move up to international standards. In the United States, for instance, you have the Executive, the Congress, and the Supreme Court. These bodies control the whole of America. Two legislative bodies are not needed in Nigeria for the following reasons:

  • It is not in vogue all over the world
  • It is a waste of salaries and allowances
  • It wastes the time of bills passages
  • It merely repeats actions
  • Too many cooks spoil the broth

Therefore, scraping the lower chamber would improve the National Assembly in Nigeria.

5. Identifying Obstacles and Tackling them

In every twelve, there is bound to be a Judas. Where we have many Judases, these Judases in the National Assembly would prevent the assembly from moving forward. Therefore, the legislative members should look within them and figure out the Judases among them. This will go a long way to improve the National Assembly.

For instance, when Nigerians heard that a member of the House assaulted a woman in Abuja, they were eager to hear what would happen to him. The legislature should deal with all such acts of irresponsibility. Thus, the National Assembly shall be improved.

6. Addressing the Country’s Critical Issues

Our legislative members are not active in addressing the critical issues facing the country. Look at the issue of insecurity. The past legislature could not tackle it. The present regime is about to end. The problem of insecurity remains the same.

There are so many issues like that, that the National Assembly should address. When they passed the Petroleum Industry Bill, Nigerians applauded them. Such a thing is what Nigerians want. Thus, to improve the National Assembly, the members should address the critical issues that are facing Nigeria.JAMB Form

7. Improved Knowledge of how the National Assembly Works

Every new assignment needs orientation. Some members of the National Assembly come to the House fresh. They lack knowledge of how the National Assembly works. Therefore, to improve the National Assembly, lawmakers should improve upon their knowledge of how the parliament is run.

Where possible, let them travel overseas to see how their mates work. Let them attend the United States Congress plenary to see how the members conduct their plenary. Let them study other parliaments in other parts of the world and see how things are done over there. For improvement, we need knowledgeable lawmakers.WAEC Result

8. Being Lawmakers who are not Self-Serving

To improve the National Assembly, we need lawmakers who will serve the interest of the public as against their interests. Our problem in Nigeria is that there are no Mandellas who are ready to die for the country. For Nigeria to be better than it is now, people must make sacrifices. Those who serve their interest cannot make Nigeria a better place to live in.Npower Recruitment

9. Maintaining Professionalism

The National Assembly should only house professionals. The legislature should be made up of those who are viable in the law. These must be renowned legal practitioners. They should be people who know what the law says. To improve the National Assembly, the Judiciary should thoroughly scrutinize all intending lawmakers for professionalism.JAMB Result

10. Impeachment

Impeachment is one of the legal weapons of the National Assembly. Our legislative arm of the government should not fear impeachment. Any member of the governing body who is not doing well should be removed. Such removal will purify the governance of Nigeria. By the time all the impurities have been removed, it will then remain only those who are viable.

Conclusion

Fellow Nigerians, we do not have another country that we can call our own. The betterment of Nigeria must be our watchword. Our vote is our power. To improve our National Assembly, we must scrutinize those we intend to vote for to go and represent us.
