PIA: We’ll resist 3% allocation to host communities, it’s aberration to N’Delta people – IYC

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, representing the interests of the Ijaw people in the Niger Delta, has openly expressed its opposition to the three per cent allocation to host communities as stipulated in the Petroleum Industry Act. The group deems this allocation as inadequate and unfair to the people of the Niger Delta region.JAMB Portal

In a new year message, which was conveyed by the IYC spokesperson, Ambassador Binebai Yerin Princewill, the council articulated its dissatisfaction with the current provisions of the Act. This message was directed to several key stakeholders, including the Federal Government of Nigeria, International Oil Companies operating in the region, governors of the Niger Delta states, and various interventionist agencies.

The Ijaw Youth Council’s stance is that the three per cent allocation to host communities, which are significantly impacted by the oil and gas exploration and production activities, is an “aberration” and does not align with the interests and welfare of the Niger Delta people. They argue that these communities deserve a more substantial share of the revenues, considering the environmental, social, and economic impacts they endure due to the industry’s activities.NYSC Portal

According to the IYC, “The Ijaws and the entire Niger Delta people are not comfortable with the paltry 3% for host communities in the PIA, we will study the PIA again and assemble our team to resist this injustice that is meted out on our people.
