As a result of this growth, it, therefore, becomes imperative to regulate the activities of these automobiles on the Nigerian highways and the activities of other road users in the country, and perhaps, should there be anything that goes wrong, they should know who to hold accountable hence, the many formation and establishment of road traffic agencies in the country to help manage traffic on Nigerian highways.

There are quite a number of road traffic agencies in Nigeria, some of these road traffic agencies are federal agencies, while some are state-based road traffic agencies.
However, since our focus in this article, is to look at the list of road traffic agencies in Nigeria, we are obliged to look at some of them in this article. Below are some of the road traffic agencies in Nigeria:

1. Metropolitan Area Transport Authority

Metropolitan area transport authority is one of the many road traffic agencies operating in the country, and the agency is mostly found in states, in other words, this agency usually operates within states, it is never a federal agency.
The primary responsibility of the metropolitan area transport authority is to plan and coordinate transport in the metropolitan cities.
The metropolitan area transport authority also has a mandate of assisting in the formulation of transport policy and the coordination of other key operational and investment decisions, as well as, that of implementation.

2. State Traffic Management Authority

The state traffic management authority is another road traffic agency, the agency operations are basically within states, it is a state-based road traffic agency established with the sole responsibility of developing a culture of regulation.
The state traffic management authority is also saddled with the responsibility of controlling and managing traffic operations in states, and the traffic agency is expected to make sure that, it works to ensure hitch-free traffic flow within state’s roads.

3. Traffic Compliance and Enforcement TRACE

Traffic compliance and enforcement is one of the road traffic agencies in Nigeria. The agency was established with the sole responsibility of managing all movement within Nigerian roads, whether the movement is vehicular movement or pedestrian movement, its duty is to manage this movement within the roads in order to ensure that there is a free flow of traffic on Nigerian roads.
Traffic compliance and enforcement is saddling with the responsibility of managing, and controlling and maintaining all roads within the states they are operating including federal roads.
Road traffic agencies in the country responsibilities are considered social services, the agencies are actually rendering social services to the nation, which are highly capital intensive.
The truth is that, when it comes to road traffic management, the government cannot face such challenges all alone, that is why many road traffic agencies have come in to assist, and the road traffic management is simply a collective responsibility of every Nigerian.

4. The National Emergency Management Agency of Nigeria NEMA

The national emergency management agency of Nigeria NEMA is one of the road traffic agencies in Nigeria. This agency was established through Act 12 that was amended by Act 50 of 1999.
The national emergency management agency of Nigeria was established and assigned the responsibility of managing disasters in the country, including those disasters in the road transportation sector.
Since when it was established, the national emergency management agency of Nigeria NEMA has been working assiduously towards fighting disaster-related issues in the country through establishing concrete structures and realistic measures to tackle the problem of disaster in Nigeria.
Some of these measures were to educate members of the public for the purpose of raising their level of awareness and also to reduce disaster effects in Nigeria.

5. Federal Road Safety Corps

Federal road safety corps is another road traffic agency in Nigeria. The agency is a government agency, established with statutory responsibilities, basically for road safety administration in the country.
The federal road safety corps was introduced in 1988, and this Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC operations are in all the states within the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.
The federal road safety corps is the lead agency when it comes to road safety administration and road management in Nigeria. The agency’s statutory responsibility include:
a. To ensure that the highways in the country are safe for motorists and all other road users.
b. To ensure a worthy highway by making sure that it checks roadworthiness of every vehicle on Nigerian highways
c. To recommend works and also infrastructures such that will help in the elimination and the minimization of accidents on the Nigerian highways
d. To educate motorists and road users, including members of the public on why they should try and discipline themselves, while on the highways. In this case, the importance of road discipline on the highways is essential.

6. Motor Vehicle Administration Agency

This is another road traffic agency operating in the country, especially within the states in Nigeria, and it is called the motor vehicle administration agency.
The motor vehicle administration agency was introduced with a cardinal objective, and the traffic agency was to provide a robust motor vehicle administration database, and the agency was to also maintain this database, as well as, ensuring the private and public sector participation for the purpose of improving revenue generation.

As a result of this growth, it, therefore, becomes imperative to regulate the activities of these automobiles on the Nigerian highways and the activities of other road users in the country, and perhaps, should there be anything that goes wrong, they should know who to hold accountable hence, the many formation and establishment of road traffic agencies in the country to help manage traffic on Nigerian highways.
