NNPP blames Kwankwaso for members’ defection to APC

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has shed light on the reasons behind the defection of its ex-National Chairman, Prof Rufa’i Alkali, and other party members to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to a statement released by the NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq, key figures such as Alkali, Prof Bem Angwe, Senator Othman Hunkuyi, and others parted ways with the NNPP due to alleged high-handedness and an uncontrollable urge to assume control of a platform generously given by Dr Boniface Aniebonam and NAGAFF for the 2023 general election.

The APC had earlier broadcasted the defection through its official platform, noting that its national chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, welcomed 26 stalwarts from NNPP, including Alkali and three governorship candidates, into the APC fold in Abuja.InformationGuideNigeria

Abdulrasaq’s statement elaborated on the roles of Angwe and Hunkuyi in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and NNPP, resulting in the amalgamation of the Kwankwassiyya and TNM factions.

Alkali, who became the national chairman as a product of this union, eventually exited the party a year later due to purported authoritarian behavior and clashes with Kwankwaso on democratic principles. Alkali’s aspirations for Nigeria’s presidency were also highlighted as a contentious point.JAMB Result

Angwe, a signatory to the MOU, had expressed discontent over alleged efforts to auction off his hard-earned governorship ticket in Benue State. This purported move caused him to become wary, which had an impact on his showing in the 2023 elections, despite significant support from the Benue populace.

Similarly, Hunkuyi, another MOU signatory, had been at odds with Kwankwaso during his tenure as the party’s National Organising Secretary. Hunkuyi’s grievances reportedly revolved around authoritative behavior, imposition, and a general unwillingness to listen to party members.JAMB Portal

The statement underscores the internal disagreements and power tussles that often influence political affiliations and decisions, especially in the lead-up to significant elections.

“While the campaign lasted, there was no noticeable contact or synergy with the governorship candidate due to the rift which was very obvious,” the statement said, adding that Hunkuyi had communicated his withdrawal to the founder of the party, Aniebonam, to whom he also apologised for all the embarrassment faced despite his benevolence during the period they came into the party.
