Top 10 Most Developed States in Nigeria

Nigeria is a country located on the western domain of Africa and it enjoys fairly favourable weather conditions due to its location on the earth (almost close to the equator). It is comprised of 36 states and a federal capital territory which is Abuja. She gained independence on the 1st of October, 1960 but had to go through waves of military and democratic rule but thankfully, the nation’s democracy is beginning to enjoy a good run. The official language spoken in Nigeria is English but she boasts of over 250 ethnic groups with different languages making it a country with vast ethnicity.

As said earlier, Nigeria has 36 states and a capital (Abuja) but not all are matched shoulder to shoulder or toe to toe in terms of development although every state is under development; some states do better to create an even atmosphere for its dwellers and also help paint a good image of the country and fosters the country’s development as a whole.

We shall consider 10 of the most developed states in Nigeria but the federal capital which is Abuja will not be mentioned even though it is a well-developed area in the country.

1. Lagos

Date of creation: 2nd of May, 1967

Capital: Ikeja

Slogan: Center of excellence

Geo-political zone: Southwest

This state is a long-standing commercial hub in Nigeria and beyond, it has 20 local government areas. Even though it might not be the largest state in Nigeria with regards to landmass, it still tops the list of developed states. Most investors, industries, and organisations ply their trade in Lagos. In terms of education, Lagos has some of the best universities e.g UNILAG and LASUU along with secondary and primary schools too. It also has a good health care system which is one significant feature of development.

2. Rivers

Capital: Port – Harcourt

Geo-political zone: South-south

One of the fast-developing states in Nigeria, it has 23 local government areas. It boasts of wonderful infrastructures which include roads, schools, hospitals and so on. Also, it is one major oil-producing state in Nigeria, accounting for over 40% of oil produced. The state has the second busiest seaport after Lagos state and it has a rich and unique culture.

3. Anambra

Date of creation: 3rd of February, 1976

Capital: Awka

Slogan: Light of the nation

Geo-political zone: Southeast

Anambra state has 21 local government areas. It had Enugu as the capital before it was splitted into 2 in 1991 leaving Awka as the new capital and Enugu as a state itself. 4. Abia

5. Enugu

A state rich in coal, this made the state a cosmopolitan settlement that brought about the construction of a railway to connect it and Port – Harcourt seaport for the expert of the mineral. Akwa Ibom is also a major oil-producing state and has two major seaports. Akwa Ibom has 31 local government areas.

A notable state in the northern part of Nigeria known for its craft and culture, it has a whooping number of local governments (44). Kano is known for industry and it is the second largest industrial state after Lagos. Major industries in Kano include textile, tanning, football wear, cosmetics, and others.

9. Ogun

10. Oyo

Home to the oldest and first university in Nigeria (University of Ibadan, UI, 1948). Ibadan its capital city is the third most populated city in Nigeria, also the first television station in Africa and the first skyscraper in Nigeria is in Oyo State.
