Biography of Omawumi Megbele

Omawumi Megbele who is known by her stage name “Omawumi” and by her fans and friends as “Omawonder” is a Nigerian singer, a message artiste and an actress who is well known and stands out in originality and flow in the delivery of powerful messages through good music that communicates societal and relationship issues, as well as inspirational messages.

She was born into a royal family of the Itsekiri people of Warri, Delta state on the 15th of April 1982. Her father was the Late Chief Dr. Frank Megbele and her mother Mrs Aya Megebele hails from Bonny island, Rivers state all in the Southern part of Nigeria.

Omawumi is a complete princess of the Niger delta who takes pride in portraying her rich cultural heritage through music.

Her single “Megbele” which was released in 2016 is a tribute to her late father and a celebration of the beautiful culture and life style of the niger deltans.

She attended Nana primary school and the college of demonstration secondary school all in Warri before proceeding to Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo state to study law.

She graduated in 2005 and worked briefly with her family law firm “O.S Megbele and Associates” in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. In addition to her law degree she studied French in Alliance Francoise.

In 2007, Omawumi was a contestant at the best music reality show at that time ” The Idols West Africa”. She contested alongside other talented people who are currently music artistes like Timi Dakolo who won the show, Jodie and the late sensational gospel artiste Eric Arubayi. Omawumi ended up right behind Timi Dakolo at the end of the show as the first runner up.

This automatically shot her to lime light as she had garnered a lot of fans and supporters including Elvina Ibru, daughter of the late Nigerian billionaire business man Olorogun Michael Ibru.

Elvina has been part of the singer’s success story. Since 2007, Omawonder has steadily grown in the Nigerian music industry by meeting the expectations of her fans.

In 2009, she ventured into the movie industry by playing a minor role in a play titled the V- Monologue which communicated the negative issues Nigerian women have to deal with everyday.

She also featured in “Olurombi” another music play and “Inale”in 2010, ‘Return of Jenifa” in 2011, “The House of Gold” in 2013,” Make a Move” in 2014, “In the music” 2014 and a few other movies. Omawumi sings more than she acts.

The singer is an ambassador for Globacom, Nigeria’s indigenous telecommunications giant and she’s one of the few artistes with the longest contract with the company. She has also had other endorsement deals with Konga and a few other companies.

Omawumi married her sweet heart Tosin Yusuf, a real estate broker and business man from kwara state quietly in 2015 after having an on and off relationship with him for a while.

They had a daughter kamilla in 2011 while dating and had their second child, a baby boy in 2015 after they had gotten married.

The singer keeps her family affairs away from the prying public and has zero tolerance for negativity from the media. She seldom posts pictures of her children on social media and as a result, most people do not know what her kids look like.

She once stormed out of the set of an interview after being asked an offensive question on her alleged smoking habit and has attacked a reporter at an event for trying to take pictures of her without her permission.

Omawonder has very close friends in the industry, her closest friends seem to be Waje Iruobe, a co singer who is her daughter’s god mother and Jennifer Alegieuno (Jbeautyfull) a make up artist for film and television.

She has also been actively involved in humanitarian projects like Maga no dey pay, Pink Pearl Foundation, Project Alert and Notes 2 Notes.

She is managed by Sunday Are and has her latest album produced by Cobhams Asuquo and has worked in the past with Dr. frabz.

Omawumi’s first album titled “Wonder Woman” was released in 2009, an album that earned her the nick name “Omawonder”. It was a well received album with massive airplay.

The single “Serious Love Nwantintin” was like a street anthem. In 20l5, her second album “Lasso Of Truth” was released.

It featured major music artistes and was a commercial success; hit singles from the album included “If You Ask Me”, African Way”, Warn Yourself featuring Wizkid” and “Bottom Belle” which featured Flavour.

Her third album, titled “Timeless” was recently released in June 2017. One of its hit single titled “Play Na Play” features international music act Angelique Kidjo.

The album Timeless has received positive reviews since its release and it has been classified as matured music for matured minds.

She had a listening concert at the Terra Kulture, Victoria Island, Lagos. She has traveled round the world, performing at events and concerts. Some of her music videos are shot in the united states.

In 2009, she won the best rated Artist category Award at the Hip Hop World Awards.

In 2010, she was awarded with the best female music video award and the best R&B and Pop artiste award at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA)

She was the outstanding recording artiste at the ICON AWARDS and the best new act in the women in entertainment and arts program me in London, United Kingdom.

In 2013, Omawumi won the most promising actress award at the Golden Icon Academy Movie Awards Ghana.

In 2014, she was nominated as the best female artist at ELOY Awards. At the headies 2016 she was nominated alongside Angelique Kidjo as best vocal performance for their hit single “Play na Play
