Become certified: After graduation from the university, it is mandatory for a graduate of Engineering to gain work experience of about 4 years in his chosen field of study before looking forward to becoming a certified Engineer. There are two major bodies that can help you achieve that.

NSE (Nigerian Society of Engineers) and COREN (Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria) are the two major bodies. The NSE is a voluntary association established by the practitioners of the profession while the council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) is a statutory organ of Federal Government, established by decree and concerned with certificate of persons for the purpose of practicing the engineering profession in Nigeria.

After studying for 5 years, it is important for a graduate to gain a minimum of 4 years’ experience in his line of Job before he is deemed qualify to apply for professional exams.

The professional exam is conducted by the NSE and is in three stages.

  • Technical Report: It requires a submission of a report of any project you have been part of or you supervised or you solely handled. If the NSE finds your report worthy, you will move on to the next stage.
  • Oral interview: It is basically testing your technical experience along your field of study
  • Professional Exam: It comprises of the Essay writing, Multi-choice questions and a lot of others. After sitting and passing your professional exams, you are now found worthy of being called an Engineer. Meaning you can now bear a title of Engr attached to your name. The corporate certificate issued to use by the NSE gives you automatic qualification to apply for COREN. If your application with COREN is successful, you can now bear the name R.Eng (Registered Engineer).

Conclusion:

In conclusion, there are lots of benefits that comes along with being an Engineer in Nigeria and they are too numerous to mention. Studying Engineering in the university doesn’t give you the automatic qualification to become a registered Engineer if you don’t go through the process.
