Nigeria has been facing incidences of banditry attacks for some years now. The banditry attacks are not equally weighted. We can safely say that there had been attacks that are major while others are minor. These armed men started killing people en mass demanding the food and relief material that the government gave them during the lockdown. The severity of the attack alerted the police and the army. Some Air Force personnel and Civil Defence members were also alerted. Before these men could do anything, the bandits had done what they wanted to do.

  1. Mass Kidnappings at Kankara

The second incidence that we want to look at is that which happened at Kankara in Katsina State. In this incidence, men that were heavily armed riding on motorcycles went into the Government Science Secondary School. Here, the bandits kidnapped more than three hundred (300) students. Sources have it that this school has about eight hundred boys who reside in the school as boarders. This was on December 11, 2020.

On December 12, the armed forces went into the forests in search of the kidnapped boys. Luckily, the armed forces found the gang’s hideout in one of the forests. They and the crooks fought in the forest. Despite all the fighting, the boys could not be recovered at that time.

It was on the dawn of December 14 that the Katsina State Governor, Aminu Bello Masari, said that the bandits contacted him for negotiations. It was later discovered that the kidnappers hid the boys in a forest in Zamfara State. Can you imagine that, from Katsina State to Zamfara State?

After all the negotiations, the governor said that the bandits decided to free three hundred and forty-four of the students. However, an undisclosed ransom was paid before the boys could be released.

  1. Zamfara State Mass Kidnapping

By February 26, 2021 banditry cases shifted from Katsina State to Zamfara State. It was then the turn of Jangebe village in Zamfara State. This was the day that bandits attacked the Government Girls Science Secondary School at Jangebe, a boarding school for girls.

After the raid on the military, they went into the school at about 1:00 am. During this operation, they abducted two hundred and seventy-nine girls. Reports had it that all of the female students who were kidnapped were released on March 2, 2021. How and why the bandits released them is not clear.

The attack on this boarding school forced the government to close all the boarding schools in the state. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) even threatened to close all schools in the state down to prevent further attacks on the students. To Amnesty International, the incident was equal to a war crime.

  1. Afaka Mass Kidnapping

This time, it was the turn of Kaduna State. Afaka mass kidnapping took place at the Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka, Kaduna State on March 11, 2021.

The kidnappers abducted thirty-nine (39) students. Being a mixed school, the abducted students were made up of twenty-three (23) female students and sixteen (16) males. The bandits attacked at night when the students were asleep.WAEC Result

To prove how dangerous these bandits were, they made a hole in the block wall surrounding the school and entered the school through there. Some members of staff sent a distress call to the first division of the Nigeria Armed Forces. They responded immediately and engaged the bandits in a gunfire fight. The fight between the bandits and the Nigeria Armed Forces gave some of the students the chance to escape more so that there was a power outage that night.

  1. Mass Kidnapping at Greenfield University

It was on April 20, 2021, that bandits kidnapped more than twenty (20) students and two (2) staff members of this University. This attack took place by 8:15 pm. After kidnapping them, the bandits had the boldness to demand eight hundred million nairas (₦800m) ransom before those kidnapped could be released.

By April 23, 2021, when no ransom was paid, they killed three of the students they abducted. They dumped the dead bodies of the students in Kwanan Bature, a village near the university. This must be an attempt to press home their demands. Having not paid any ransom yet, they killed two more students on April 26, 2021.

After this, a parent decided to pay a ransom for his child. On receiving the ransom, the bandits released the student on May 1, 2021. After other parents paid a hundred and fifty million naira ransom and bought eight new motorcycles for the bandits, they released fourteen students on May 29, 2021, wickedness!

  1. Massacres at Zamfara State

In Zamfara State, bandits killed more than two hundred people between January 4 and 6, 2022. Reporters saw this attack to be the deadliest in the history of banditry in Nigeria.Npower Recruitment

  1. Massacre in Kebbi State

On January 14, 2022, a bandit gang entered Dankade village in Kebbi State and killed more than fifty people. They did not stop there. They continued their killings of the villagers and burning down their shops and their grain silos. They went further to steal their cattle.

  1. More Massacres in Kebbi State

Bandit gangs killed more than eighty (80) people in Kebbi State on March 8, 2022. By 4:30 pm on this same day, they attacked Kanya village and killed thirteen (13) soldiers together with five (5) police officers and a member of a civil vigilante.JAMB Result

  1. Massacres at Plateau State

Plateau State received its turn of massacres on April 10, 2022. On this day, bandits killed over a hundred and fifty (150) people. Apart from that, they kidnapped seventy (70) people.

  1. Attack on Abuja-Kaduna Train

On March 28, 2022, bandits bombed a train that left Abuja for Kaduna at about 7:45 pm. They killed more than sixty (60) people and kidnapped above one hundred and fifty (150) passengers.JAMB Form

After the attack on the train, Nigerian Air Force raided the forest between Niger State and Kaduna State and killed more than thirty-four (34) bandits. Good attempt, is it not? If the Nigerian Air Force had been doing this during all of the attacks, will any bandit remain in Nigeria?
