Labour strike responsible for South-East blackout — EEDC

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) has attributed the current power outage in parts of Southeast Nigeria to the ongoing nationwide strike organized by labor unions. This explanation was provided in a statement by Emeka Ezeh, the Head of Corporate Communications for EEDC.NYSC Portal

According to Ezeh’s statement, the blackout is a direct result of actions taken by the task force teams from the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). These teams reportedly visited the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stations on Wednesday, where they compelled workers to leave their posts.InformationGuideNigeria

Furthermore, Ezeh stated that the task force also targeted interface distribution substation officers, driving them out and subsequently shutting down the stations. This led to a loss of electricity supply from several key TCN stations, including New Haven, Abakaliki, Ugwuaji, Oji River, Agu Awka, Nibo, Ohiya, and Awada. These stations are crucial for providing power to various states in the Southeast region.

The EEDC is responsible for distributing electricity to the Southeast states of Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Ebonyi. The disruption in services from these TCN stations has, therefore, significantly impacted the electricity supply in these areas, contributing to the blackout experienced by residents and businesses.

The statement read, “Earlier today, the task force team of the NLC and TUC visited the Transmission Company of Nigeria stations, forced workers out, including our interface Distribution Substation Officers and shutdown the stations.

“This action resulted in the loss of supply from the New Haven, Abakaliki, Ugwuaji, Oji River, Agu Awka, Nibo, Ohiya, and Awada TCN stations.JAMB Portal

“It will be recalled that our customers in Imo State have been without electricity supply since November 1, 2023, following a faceoff between the Labour Union and the Imo State government which led to the shutdown of Egbu TCN Station, our source of supply.”JAMB Result

He stated that the organisation was aware of the inconveniences this development has caused its customers and pleaded for their understanding, as the situation is beyond them.
