Anyone acquainted with the Nigerian music industry will swiftly recognize the moniker Seyi Shay. She is a vastly experienced singer, song writer and performer whose expertise and hard work pushed her to fame shortly after she arrived Nigeria from the United kingdom.

Oluwaseyi Deborah Joshua was born on the 21st of December 1985 in Tottenham, London United Kingdom to a Nigerian Father who hailed from Ile -Ife, Osun State and a mother who hailed from the northern part of Nigeria.

Though she was born in England, she started visiting Nigeria as a toddler and attended the Command High School in Maryland, Lagos before returning to England where studied music at a local college and eventually graduated from the University of East London with a degree in business management.

Seyi and her siblings were raised by their late mother in a pious and godly way; her mum sang in the church choir while her only and elder sister composed songs for television, one of her brothers also worked as a radio and club disc jockey.

Her entire family was obviously endeared to music. The versatile singer who embraces different genres of music in the communication of her art has her mother, Mathew Knowles, Tubaba Idibia. Beyonce, Wizkid, Omawumi and Tina Turner as her musical inspiration.

Although her late mother wanted her to study medicine or law, she was barely six when she fell in love with music, she grew up to be part of the London community choir and toured the world with them.

She signed her first record deal with “No Apology” a record label affiliated to George Martin of The fifth Beatle and In 2006, she formed a girl band called Boadicea, they were managed by Ron Tom, the manager and founder of All Saints and Sugarbabes. The band disbanded two years later.

Seyi moved ahead to audition successfully in the “From Above UK Singing Competition” where she emerged as a lead vocalist for a defunct singing group which consisted of five girls.

They got signed to Mathew Knowles management company and were moved to Houston to undergo trainings. They supported Beyonce during her “I am” world tour and presented an award during the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, they also had a reality show called “Breaking From Above” on MTV.

It aired in over sixty six countries around the world. She continued her management deal with Mathew Knowles and secured a recording contract with Sony.

In 2011, ace Nigerian musician Sound Sultan met Seyi Shay in one of his visits to London. He was awed by her talents and convinced her to move to Nigeria in pursuance of her career.

He also introduced her to Cecil Hammond of Fly time promotions who signed her to the music label “Fly Time Music”.

She settled down and began to push hard, she released her first three singles ”Seyi or Shay”, “No Le Le” and “Coming your way” within a short interval and became a regular to lovers of Nigerian music.

In 2012, she released “Irawo” her hit single. Irawo which means star in Yoruba language featured rapper Vector. It garnered massive airplay all over Nigeria and was a favorite to music lovers.

In 2013, she left Fly time music and signed with another talent management company under which she worked with artists like Timaya to release several singles, one of which was “Raga Raga” a rhythmic dancehall hit that topped music charts all over Nigeria for a reasonable period.

Early in 2014, she came up with another massive hit “Murda” which featured reggae dancehall artist Patoranking and singer Shaydee.

It was an explosive hit that gained a lot of positive reviews and ratings from music critics and lovers. In 2015, she released the entire album “Seyi or Shay” to the delight of her fans.

The singer recently headlined a music concert tagged “ Blanket and Wine” in Uganda. She teamed up with South African rappers to create the official sound track for season five of SHUGA, the MTV award winning drama series.

Early in 2017, she became a brand ambassador for Gionee another telecommunications company. She is also an ambassador for Barcadi freezer. Her net worth is estimated at 1.2 million dollars.

Charity of Seyi Shay

The singer has a heart for charitable causes and philanthropic acts. She’s a long term supporter of Slum 2 School a project that focuses on providing education for street kids.

She has also performed in shows and concerts solely for humanitarian purposes. She recently showed support by her social media pages for the victims of the recent flood disaster in Markurdi, capital of Benue state, north central Nigeria and for people living with sickle cell disease.

In may 2015, she set up a foundation called “SHAY A RAY OF HOPE” with the aim of aiding impoverished children in Africa.
