North-East states constitute an important geopolitical zone in Nigeria. The region is a rich sociocultural entity that is famous for its vibrant culture and traditions, mineral resources, historical artifacts, tourist attractions, and others.

Also, the region makes up approximately one-third of the country’s total landmass and is the biggest zone by area size. There also exist various ethnic groups in the North East States in Nigeria but the majority is the Fulani exception of Borno State which has Kanuri as its dominant ethnic group. 1. Adamawa State

Slogan: Land of Beauty

Adamawa State is located in North-East Nigeria. The state’s capital city is Yola, and this municipality was created on August 27th, 1991. It has a growing population of 3,178,950 people living across its 36,917 km² landmasses. Thus, the city is the 26th most populated and the 8th largest state in Nigeria.  

More so, the city is dominated by Fulanis while other minor ethnic groups are Bata, Mumuye, Kapsiki, Higi, Hausa, Chamba, Margi, Gude, Kilba, Jukun, and Wurkum. The major religion practiced here is Christianity, and the Sharia law is not valid in Adamawa state. 2. Bauchi State 

Slogan: Pearl of Tourism

Bauchi is one of the 36 states in Nigeria and is located in North East. Its capital city is Bauchi, and the state was created on 3rd February 1976. It has a growing population of 4,676,465 people; ranking as the 7th most populated city in the country. The city also has a total landmass of 49,119 km² making it the 5th largest state.

Furthermore, the state is home to Hausa/Fulani, Gerawa, Jarawa, Sayawa, Kanuri, Bolewa, Butawa, Karekare, Badawi, Fa’awa, Zulawa, and Warjawa which constitutes its major ethnic groups. 3. Borno State

Slogan: Home of Peace

Borno State is a city located in North-East Nigeria. The state was created on 3rd February 1976 and the capital city is Maiduguri. Borno and Bauchi have the oldest North-East Nigeria date of creation.  The city has a growing population of 5,860,200 people living across its 70,898 km² landmasses. This makes it the 12th most populated and the second biggest city in Nigeria.

Also, this municipality is dominated by the Kanuri people while Hausa makes up a large minority. The main languages spoken here are Kanuri, Shuwa Arabic, and Marghi. Gombe state is part of North-East Nigeria. The state was created on 1st October 1996 and the capital city is Gombe. It has a growing population of 2,365,040 people living across its total landmass of 18,768 km². Thus, the city is the 21 largest and 33rd most populated in Nigeria.

Moreover, the dominant ethnic group in the state is Fulani. Tangale forms a large minority while others ethnicities are Kanuri, Waja, Tula, Hausa, Tera, and Bolewa. The city has numerous mineral resources like Coal, Limestone, Granite, Lead, Zinc,  Laterite, and Granite Dust.

Taraba is a state that is located in the North-Eastern part of Nigeria. The state whose capital is Jalingo was created on 27th August 1991. It has a growing population of 2,294,800 people spread across its 54,473 km² area. This makes it the 3rd largest and 30th most populated city in the country.

Also, this municipality is dominated by the Mumuyes people while its minority ethnic groups are Fulanis, Kuteb Chamba, Hausa, Yandang, Wurkums, Mambila, Tiv, Janjo, Vute, Ichen, Jukun, Kaka, Pena, Kambu, Ndola among others. The city is blessed with numerous natural resources which include Barytes, Bauxites, Graphites, Galena, Limestone, Gypsum, Kaolin, Feldspar, Mica, Pyrite, Uranium, Gemstones e.t.c.

Yola is a state that is located in North-East Nigeria. The state was created on 27th August 1991 and its capital city is Damaturu.  It has a growing human population of 2,321,339 living across its 45,502 km² landmasses. Thus, the city is the 6th largest and 32nd most populated in the country. 

More so, this municipality is dominated by the Fulani and Kanuri people while Bolewa, Karai-Karai, Hausa, Shuwa, Marghi, Ngizim, Bade, Ngamo, Manga, and Bura forms its minor ethnic groups. Conclusion

Despite its security challenges, North East is an important zone in Nigeria. There is also a huge presence of mineral resources in North-East Nigeria and some of these nature’s gifts are untapped. 

More so, there are 112 local government areas in the North-East geopolitical zone. The main occupation of this region is agriculture but there is also a significant number of manufacturing and technology start-ups. This zone has a low average Human Development Index (HDI) yet is one of the nation’s economic centres.
