Jeep Compass vs Volkswagen Tiguan: Specs Comparison

The Jeep Compass is one of the latest SUVs on the block. The pre-bookings have already been started and just in a matter of days, we will be seeing the newest version of Jeep Compass plying on the Indian roads.

However, considering the market, it is never going to be easy for a new SUV to make a big impression on Indian customers as the competition is immensely fierce.

But yet, on the first impression, you can say that the Compass has a long way to go, at least we expect it to.

And then, when we talk about the competition, we can barely miss the Volkswagen Tiguan, the SUV that has already made a name for itself.

The Tiguan can be best described as a combination of everything nice, starting from its physical design to its mechanism.

But the introduction of these two SUVs will make the segment bigger and more crowded along with getting the dilemma of the prospect buyers to get to an all-time high.

So, to save yourself from such a situation, here is a detailed comparison and evaluation of the two upcoming pillars of Indian premium SUV market. It should give you a fair idea of how these two cars would perform if they are compared, head on.

The aesthetic design

Let’s get to the portion all of you would be hoping for, the way they are designed. The Jeep Compass definitely looks big at the first instance, and without a hint of doubt, it is.

Though the designing is nothing fancy as one would have expected it to be, just like the bigger Grand Cherokee. It looks like a rebel, yet subdued. Softly designed it is, albeit the front section.

The seven-chambered front grill is definitely carried from the Cherokee. The lower bumper is aggressive with the spoilers getting black treatment on them.

The lower profile all around gets extra black cladded skirting, which makes the wheel arches butcher. Get back to the rear and you will get a completely different story. The designing is soft and roundish and looks harmless to its core. Even the split tail lights are not that edgy and sharp.

The same goes with the Volkswagen Tiguan as well. It could well be called as a deceptor. It has a heart of steel but is soft in appearance. Yet, you get it on the road and it will grunt like an angry panther. But there is a different story to the Tiguan.

It is all about sophistication to the extremes. The front profile is nowhere close to be called bold but is classy. The front profile has headlamps that flow seamlessly into the radiator grille. There are no sharp lines on the body, which is great for the purists.

The interior layout

The interior of the Jeep Compass is all about style at every bit. Starting from the dashboard to the dual tone colour layout, the entire setting is lower in the aggression and higher in style.

The 3-spoke steering wheel and the smartly designed infotainment could well be termed as the highlighting factor in the car. However, upon usage, you might find the touchscreen display to be little laid back in response.

In fact, the screen also seems to be small to be having something like Apple CarPlay. However, keeping that aside, there is barely any room for complaints. The seating is comfortable and there are AC vents for the rear row as well, which ranks almost half of the comfort level.

On the other hand, the inside story of the Volkswagen Tiguan is another fusion. It is something you can call brash yet useful.

The way everything is clustered together will give you the impression of being too informative at once. The touchscreen display is big (12.3-inch) and has everything that you would be needing, including Google’s Android Auto, Apple’s CarPlay as well as MirrorLink.

On the comfort parameter, it might rank just over the Compass. It has a 3-zone climate control and the highlighting panoramic sunroof.

The power within

The Jeep Compass has a 2.0-litre turbo, four-cylinder diesel engine at its heart. The engine is very capable of making a maximum power of 171 bhp and grunt to a maximum of 350 Nm torque.

The engine is highly responsive, but only post the 1,500 revs per minute mark. You might feel a little laggy if you are driving below that level.

The engine is coupled to only a 6-speed manual transmission gearbox with no signs of an automatic gearbox as of now.

The Volkswagen Tiguan is also powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine, which is the only option available for the Indian market. However, it has a much more refined engine, which gets the maximum power figures down.

At the max, the Tiguan can make up to 141, which is a straight 30 bhp lesser than the Compass. But once on the open road, this weakness never makes any difference.

The car can clock triple digit with effortless ease. On the highway, the Tiguan is the more convenient car as the 7-speed DSG gearbox allows smooth sailing possible.

There are also different drive modes to choose from, which include Normal, Off road, Off road Individual and lastly, Snow. Shifting between modes is easy and the powertrain gets highly responsive.

Our Verdict

With the Jeep Compass slated for a launch in India sooner than later, it will bring a big difference to the current breed of SUVs in the country. It will be competing against the premium range of SUVs like the Isuzu MU-X and the Honda CR-V.

That said, let aside a small glitch in the car’s dashboard (small infotainment screen, remember?), there isn’t any such factor that will make the SUV irrelevant among them.

On the other hand, the Volkswagen Tiguan leaves no reasons to complain. With a rather plain physical design, the Tiguan carries the expectation throughout.

The well-equipped interiors and the refined and responsive engine promises to deliver more than the design suggests. Even the large touchscreen display and the sunroof suggests the same.

So in this battle, the Tiguan has an upper hand on the Compass, but only marginally.
