Thomas Tuchel explains Chelsea goalkeeper decision vs Luton after huge Kepa disappointment

Thomas Tuchel believes Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has overcome the “huge disappointment” of missing the decisive penalty in the Carabao Cup final but has stayed tight-lipped over whether the Spaniard will start against Luton Town in the FA Cup.

Kepa was introduced off the bench at Wembley solely for the shootout against Liverpool yet failed to save eleven consecutive penalties before he blasted his own spot-kick well over the crossbar.Information Guide Nigeria

Tuchel’s decision to bring on the 27-year-old in place of Edouard Mendy – arguably the Blues’ standout performer on Sunday – has resulted in much discussion and debate. Yet Tuchel continues to stand by his choice.

“Kepa took us to Wembley,” the Chelsea head coach said today during his pre-match press conference. “We needed two penalty shoot-outs [en-route to the final] and he saved the decisive penalties for us. So he was hugely involved and responsible that we had this final.

“He also won the penalty shoot-out in the Super Cup [having come off the bench] and he is responsible that we have the match tomorrow because he saved the late penalty against Plymouth in the last round.

“So he did his job in a fantastic manner but the penalties were well-taken [by Liverpool’s players] and the momentum was not on our side in the shootout. “And to blame a goalkeeper for missing a penalty would be like blaming an outfield player for not saving a penalty – this is simply not his job.

“It’s almost like tossing a coin in the end when all the penalties are taken so well. So there was no blame on him, absolutely no blame. “Today in training, I found him very focused and relaxed in a way after he had a huge disappointment about the outcome. So after a day off yesterday, he was relaxed and trained very well.”JAMB Result
