At Balmoral, Buckingham Palace, and Windsor, there have been spontaneous gatherings and outpourings of emotion.
Members of the public have travelled to leave flowers, messages of thanks, and condolences for the Queen and Royal Family, with many visibly emotional or overcome.
Union flags are flying at half mast, and Lords and MPs have gathered to commemorate her historic 70-year reign.
A gun salute has been planned for the following hour in London’s Hyde Park, with 96 rounds to mark each year of her life to be fired around 13:00 BST.
Prime Minister Liz Truss and other senior ministers will attend a remembrance service at St Paul’s Cathedral at 18:00 BST.
