Functions of the World Health Organization – The World Health Organization was founded precisely on the 7th of April in 1948 for the purpose of coordinating the affairs of human health especially within the system of the United Nations.   1. Winning against Tropical diseases

According to WHO,  at least,  one out of every six people living in tropical areas has been affected by these tropical diseases,  thereby being the cause of so many deaths across the world especially Africa,  tropical diseases have been a major target of the WHO,  the organization in partnership with other humanitarian bodies such as Helen Keller International have in turn battled with over 12 kinds of tropical diseases around the world.

  1. Submerging Yellow Fever

Upon the emergence of Yellow Fever in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2016, World Health Organization came up with the ‘Eliminate Yellow Fever Epidemics’ which was filed at vaccinating the vulnerable population against the fever,  the vaccination was made available by the UNICEF,  the campaign covered about 40 countries and ever since then,  Yellow fever was contained and very rare cases of yellow fever has been recorded ever since.

  1. Combating Malaria

According to study,  there has been a total of 219 million people  infected with malaria all over the world and about 435,000 people have does as a result of the infection as at 2017. The WHO has put in a great effort in ensuring that the numbers of infected persons drastically reduced to about 45% globally and 49% in Africa. Through this,  the lives of people especially in the developing countries have been spared.

  1. Mass reduction in the cost of Hepatitis C Medication

Before now,  about 80% of those living with Hepatitis C could not have access to being treated or even tested to say at least,  those who were not infected had no way of even getting prevention against the plague because the cost was on the high side.   1. The Triumph over small Pox

Due to its deadly nature,  small pox in 1950 was the cause for the death of over 2 million people all over the world. It was a very deadly disease with Asia and Africa being the worse hit continents. The WHO understudied the disease and came to a conclusion of vaccinating about 80 percent of the world’s population, the exercise was a success and on the 8th of May,  1980, it was officially declared that the world was free from small pox and since then,  there has been little or no cause for alarm.

The Executive Board  of the WHO is made up of 34 persons that have been carefully selected from the member states and deemed to be qualified especially in the health field. To be selected,  first you have to be a citizen of one  of the states and each board members serve humanity through the organization for a period of three years.

In order to fulfil its objective, in accordance to its Constitution, the WHO performs the following functions

  1. Positioning itself as the coordinating and directing authority in regards to international health work.
  2. Maintaining and establishing collaboration which is effective with the United Nation as well as other specialized agencies, professional groups, governmental health administrations and other organizations that they may considered as appropriate.JAMB Portal
  3. Helping the government especially when they request for it to strengthen their health services.
  4. Making available the necessary technical assistance and in the case of emergencies provide the necessary help to the government when they request for it.
  5. Making provision for or assist in making provision for health services and also relief materials to groups that are special in the case where the United Nations request.
  6. Establishment and Maintenance of technical and administrative services which may be required, comprising of statistical and epidemiological services.
  7. Stimulating and Advancing work in order to flush out endemic, epidemic as well as other diseases.
  8. Promotion of the deterrence of injuries as a result of accidents in cooperation with agencies that have a specialty in that field especially where it is necessary.Good Morning Love Message
