What Are These factors That Hindered Good Standards In  Business Education?

The factors that are militating against good standards in business education are numerous, but in this article, I will be looking at some of them, and here are there below:

1. Bad Planning

There is mainly bad planning of curricula of business schools and colleges and institutions, as misconceptions of exactly what the mission of different levels and kinds of educational institutions should be, this also happened, even by those who owned these colleges and the institutions.

2. Attitude Of Workers And Staff

Attitude of workers and staff is part of the factors that hindered standards in business education in Nigeria, and this is as a result of poor remuneration.
The problem is that most of these workers have to fend for themselves by using an alternative source of income, whether it is legal or illegal; and whether it is ethical or unethical, why because different owners, especially in government agencies, do not normally pay workers and staff monthly salaries and monthly allowances as at when due.
And I will tell you that, it is counterproductive not to pay staff and workers salaries and allowances and other benefits as at when due.  This is the situations that normally result in an unproductive workforce in an organization.

3. Incessant Strikes

There is also another issue that hindered standards in business education in Nigeria, and this issue is that of the major problem of incessant strikes in workplaces. These strikes are actually as a result of many of these reasons I have already given above.

4. Development Of Business Education

Having discussed some of the factors that have actually hindered good standards in business education in Nigeria, that out of the way, in order to develop business education in Nigeria or to get better and also effective results for products of business education institutions in the country, there is the need for the following:
  • Reorientation

There is a need for the reorientation for the purpose of providing insight or should  I say, a way forward for

  • Government and
  • Unions and
  • Staff and
  • Students, as well

Other stakeholders include;

  • parents, and
  • employers of labours among others.

5. Focus On Quality

It is worthwhile to note here that, it is not the number of universities and colleges and business schools in any area or state or nation that really count but it is the quality. There must be an exertion of political will by the government, and also focus must be on quality.

6. Recruitment Of Qualified Staff

Universities and colleges and business schools, for example, are centres that actually thrive on the passion of gaining knowledge and also transferring knowledge for societal development.
These universities and colleges and business schools have to make sure that they work hard and with the right and qualified workers, who have a passion for business education, and passion for excellence and passion for break-through to impacting the society positively.

7. Insisting In Fulfilling Universities’ Mandate

Most of these universities and colleges and business schools are not in essence, fulfilling their statutory mandates of teaching, and research as well as, that of community development.
My observation and experience is that, the people of local communities usually see universities and colleges and business schools sited in their environments as local community educational institutions just for the employment of their community members at any cost without taking into consideration the needs of these universities and colleges and business schools or even the budgetary allocations and other societal relevance.

8. Recruiting Top Scholars Abroad To Discourage Nigeria-Overseas-Students’-Drift

In those days, universities and colleges in Nigeria usually recruit top scholars and some administrators abroad, for instance from United State of America, and the United Kingdom, and India, and Canada, and Egypt, and Ghana, including other Commonwealth nations among other countries.
More so students from abroad who are not Nigerians will come to Nigerian tertiary institutions for their programmes.
But today, the difference is the case, Nigerian students are moving from Nigeria to other countries of the world, where they also pay very heavily to attend institutions there, this includes accommodation and tuitions.

9. Equipping Nigerian Institutions To A Global Standard

I can point out to you that most of these institutions found abroad are of global standard and are really well-equipped with assorted learning resources and facilities.
Universities and colleges are supposed to be of international standard, and their contributions to the society should not in anywhere be of mean value.
There should be an urgent call for the reorientation of members of different communities for the purpose of making them to note every university and college located in their communities.
They should be of a standard, such that will influence these communities positively in one way or in the other way through their exceptional research output.

10. Appropriate Criteria Appointment Of Principal Officers

There should be appropriate criteria when it comes for appointments and promotions of principal officers in Nigerian colleges and universities.
Universities and colleges staff and administrators are more often bent by ill-qualified leaders in these universities. Nigerian universities and colleges should truly be universal, and also should be of highest or global standard.

11. Proper Funding

Universities and colleges supposed to be properly funded. These universities and colleges supposed to have solid and state of the art infrastructure, and facilities, and instructional materials, among others.
The universities and colleges should be so funded that they attract and then retain good and qualified staff who can creditably push out reliable meaningful research findings.

Conclusion

Universities and colleges and business schools are all centres that actually thrive on the passion of gaining knowledge and also transferring knowledge for societal development.
These universities and colleges and business schools have to make sure that they work hard and with the right and qualified workers, who have a passion for business education, and passion for excellence and passion for break-through to impacting the society positively.
