Wojciech Szczesny claims he had a €100 wager with Lionel Messi before a contentious penalty was awarded during Poland’s 2022 World Cup group match against Argentina after a VAR review.
After assessing the potential penalty on his pitch-side monitor, Dutch referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot, much to the amazement of spectators and analysts.Information Guide Nigeria

Szczesny captured Messi in midair as he attempted to clear the ball with an extended arm. Messi headed the ball, but it was not a clear opportunity to score.
The penalty was awarded after the Argentinian captain fell to the ground holding his face.

However, Szczesny made an outstanding stop on Messi’s penalty attempt to keep the score tied at halftime.
“I immediately told the referee that I touched him (Messi) with my hand in the face, but I only hit him on the side of his face. I told him there was contact but I don’t think there is a penalty. The referee decided otherwise and that’s fine – I got to show off,” Szczesny, the former Arsenal goalkeeper who joined Juventus in 2017, was quoted saying by Goal.
“Now I can say that I knew where Messi would shoot, but at the time I wasn’t so sure. Leo looks at the keeper on some penalties and hits hard on others.
