Over 700m persons face global water stress – UN body

United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has revealed that over 700 million people in the world face high and critical water stress.Information Guide Nigeria

According to THE NATION, over 90 per cent of natural disasters are water related as global water availability and quality are deteriorating.

Speaking, the Deputy Director-General of FAO, Maria Semedo, noted that agriculture must lead the way to exit the water crisis, said strong political will is needed as well as proper planning.

“If we are to protect the future of food, and meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the needs and role of agriculture must be supported.NYSC Portal

“Agriculture itself needs to get more efficient at using water, better at keeping pollutants out of water bodies, and more resilient to climate change.

“The key is to act now with integrated water resource management approaches to produce more food, fibre, feed and biofuel with less water, more sustainably”, Semedo noted.

THE NATION reports that she said that said FAO is working to address water scarcity in agriculture and the environment initiative, built on success in the near East and North Africa, which is expanding to Asia and the Pacific.JAMB Result

She further added the body will support the Water Action Agenda that emerges from UN 2023 Water Conference through transformation to more efficient, resilient, inclusive and sustainable agrifood systems.
