Nigeria’s human rights record to be reviewed in Geneva Jan 23

Nigeria is set to undergo its fourth examination of its human rights record by the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) working group.

The review is scheduled for Tuesday, January 23, 2024, during a meeting in Geneva, and it will be broadcast live on the web.NYSC Portal

As stated by the UN Human Rights Council, Nigeria is among 14 countries that will be reviewed during the upcoming session from January 22 to February 2, 2024. This marks the fourth UPR cycle for Nigeria, with previous reviews taking place in February 2009, October 2013, and November 2018.JAMB Result

The UPR Working Group, consisting of the 47 member states of the Human Rights Council, conducts the peer review process. However, all 193 UN Member States can participate in the review of a country. The reviews are based on national reports submitted by the state under review, reports from independent human rights experts, UN entities, and information from other stakeholders, including civil society groups.JAMB Portal

During the fourth UPR cycle, states are expected to outline the steps taken to implement recommendations from previous reviews and highlight recent human rights developments in the country.

The live webcast of the session will be available on UN Web TV, and the list of speakers and statements delivered during the review will be posted on the UPR Extranet. The UPR Working Group is set to adopt the recommendations made to Nigeria on Friday, January 26, 2024, and the state under review may express its positions on the recommendations during this period.
