This post contains detail info on the German Embassy in Nigeria. After Nigeria`s independence on 01.10.1960, a building was constructed for the German mission in Lagos on today`s Walter Carrington Crescent on Victoria Island in Lagos. The edifice, built in 1963-1964, still serves as chancery of the German Consulate General these days.

The German embassy is one of 166 foreign representations in Nigeria, and one of 106 foreign representations in Abuja. The German embassy in Abuja is one of 559 German diplomatic and consular representations abroad.

A brief history of the German Consulate General in Lagos

As Lagos was chosen as the first capital of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Ambassador`s residence were located at this site as well. More than 30 years later, Abuja was made capital of Nigeria in 1991. As a result, the German Embassy moved from Lagos to Abuja in 2000, thus leaving the mission in Lagos behind as a so-called outpost. In the following years, the mission in Lagos was predominantly responsible for consular tasks.

In 2008, given the continuing role of Lagos as the economic and cultural heart of Nigeria, it was decided to promote the mere outpost in Lagos to a Consulate General. Although the Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos still work together in close cooperation, the Consulate General in Lagos is no longer s part of the Embassy in organisational terms, but serves as a mission in its own rights, increasingly attending to economic and cultural topics and issues. The Consulate General is responsible for the following administrative district: States of Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo and Rivers.
